If the weather holds up I'm planning a trip on the East Bay Bikepath and wanted to spend the day in Newport. Has anyone ever tried riding the bridge? I have a feeling I'm going to get buzzed a few times along the way.

DX, I've ridden over that bridge a few times. It's not the most bike-friendly bridge, but there seems to be enough bike traffic over that bridge so drivers know to give you a bit of room before they pass.

It is a little hairy since the bridge is so narrow. If you avoid riding over it a rush hour, you should be fine.

I rode over it and both times I went at off peak traffic time. I stayed in the middle of the lane just to the side of the grease cars leave on the road. A little scary after the crest of the bridge, you go real fast.

Never rode the bridge, but your post brings back memories...my wife went to Roger Williams University, the school you'll pass at the base of the bridge. Used to go down to visit her at least once a month, and we'd head over to Newport over the bridge.

Not sure if it'll be on your route, but Colt State Park on Rt. 114 is beautiful, and might make a nice rest stop.

Thanks, I forgot how steep that bridge is on. A friend reminded Newport is going to be crawling with people this weekend, due to the long holiday weekend, so the bridge is going to be packed most of the time. I'm going to wait until next weekend.

Steve, funny that you mention Colt State Park. I rode out to Bristol a few weeks ago and spent a couple of hours there on the way back. It was a nice ride through the park.

This is a pic from the Bristol town beach, which is next to the park. I took this the day Hurricane Bill was heading past, so it's a little hazy farther out.
