Will a regular shimano ring with ramps work for my ss conversion? I found an old ridgid Schwinn Sierra with STX components at a pawn shop for $40. It is a 7 speed with Richey wheels and an old Scott bullhorn bar. The frame is steel and I can't believe how light it is. I took the big and little ring off and I want to use the 32t if it will work. I worry about it jumping off with out a guard. I am using a Surly tensioner in the back.

I have a singleator and a 32t shimano ramped cog and haven't had trouble as of yet. I still want to put on a plain ol' chainring sometime, though.

Never had a problem myself with a setup like that, s/s (with a tensioner and without) and fixed.
