One speed only and as Henry Ford once said, you can have any color as long as its in black! That's a back to the basics hybrid!

Looks sort of like a Schwinn Racer. What's new is old. Here's the Speedster version with a 3 speed hub.

I realize the word "hybrid" no longer has a definition or meaning on this forum any longer, but to call that thing a hybrid is ridiculous.

I dont think he was calling it a hybrid per se hence the City bike in the topic title.

A hybrid can be any bike that's not a road bike or MTB. The city bike is the forerunner of modern hybrids. People want a bike for comfort as well as for day to day fun. The Bowery line fits that test. I realize it may not be what you want but no one is forcing you to buy it!

The Globe Live is priced twice as much as the one discussed on this thread. If I had to do it all over again, I'd keep some dough in my pocket and buy American!

+1.
It's not a hybrid.

How you can call it "priced right" also defies logic. It looks more like a beach-cruiser than a relative of the hybrid.

City bikes are NOT beach cruisers. They are practical means of transportation for daily errands as well as fun. The picture of the bike shown shares the geometry of a hybrid and the design that makes them such an inviting alternative to road bikes and MTBs. Don't knock a city bike until you've taken a test ride on one.

Price is too high for a basic single speed bicycle with a coaster brake.

Modern hybrids have sloping top tubes, multiple gears, and flat bars... unless I get a hold of them.
This bike has a relaxed geometry with a level top tube, porteur bars, chain case, fenders, and a one speed drive and fits the design parameters of a city bike.
Consider that a number of imported bicycles of very similar design sell for $800.00 and up and the fact this bike is hand built in the US and costs $600.00 and the price does not look too bad... and that price also appears to include shipping anywhere in the U.S.

yea the Globe Live is expensive even compared to the Trek Belleville which I'm holding out for. The bike you posted is nice but I dont live in the States anymore and can imagine that even if they would ship to Canada it would be expensive

Almost three times as much actually for ones with belt drive. Nice bikes, but I'm going to need some time to adjust to the idea of a $1550 utility bike. :(

The city bike is a simple hybrid. There's a case to be made for keeping things simple. As Samuel Beckett was fond of saying, "less is more." In this case, what you see is what you get indeed.

Less in more in bicycling, but those bikes look really heavy. I see less technology, but more bike. Much more. They are the most.

The city bike is a simple hybrid.
Simply not the case.
The city bike was designed specifically to serve a singular purpose, which is to ridden on the street. A hybrid is a combination of two distinctly different bicycle styles amalgamated by design to provide a multitude of purposes, i.e., street and off road.
It's simple enough to understand the differences.

Some one who thought I cared too much about what was or wasn't a hybrid is now parroting the bike industry's definition of the term and sounding very closed minded to alternative definitions.
Hybrid riding is a state of mind. Still the internal dialog and just feel it, baby.

Agreed. People have their own idea of what's a hybrid to them. For me, it can be from one speed up to multi-speed derailleurs and IGH. The truth is no one bike will suit every one. A city bike isn't a cruiser, road bike or MTB. Its a bike that holds a place in my heart for me and my very first hybrid was a 1970s Schwinn Speedster in Lemon Kool.

The city bike is versatile. Its beast of burden of cousin, the roadster, is still used in countries where paved streets are poor to non-existent. You can ride a city bike on dirt paths and light trails although I wouldn't take it places where a real MTB would go. People don't do that either with their hybrids. Its more a state of mind than a particular kind of bicycle.

That would probably be me... and I am pretty open minded.
My position on this has always been that there is a marketing definition and a working definition and this will probably cause people confusion until the end of time.
When most bikey people hear "hybrid" a certain type of bicycle comes to mind and I am no different... I am surrounded by them.
:)
I used the bike industry's definition to illustrate the differences between what is marketed as a hybrid and what is more aptly described as a city bike because they do have some significant differences.
If I was selling this bike at my shop it would be listed and described as a "city bike" as calling it a hybrid would really confuse the masses.

No, it's not you. You are the last person I would accuse of having a very limited definition of hybrid bicycle.
Consider that a number of imported bicycles of very similar design sell for $800.00 and up...
I'm having trouble finding any other bikes with as low a spec as these single speed, coaster brake only, gas-pipe steel Boweries. The KHS Green is MSRP'd around half the price of the Bowery, and includes a Shimano three-speed hub and a front brake. Can you help us out with the bikes you were thinking of?
...the fact this bike is hand built in the US...
With the global village and complexities of modern manufacturing, "Made in X" is a tricky statement. This bike's frame is built in the US, which probably counts for less than half its value-added. Bowery Lane's claim of American manufacture, as they state it on their web site, does not begin to meet the Federal Trade Commission's regulations and is illegal.
Best,
tcs

The fact that it's defined as a city bike is indication enough that it's not a hybrid.
what's the diff between a utility bike and a hybrid?
WCoastPeddler
09-07-09, 09:56 AM
A utility bike is not designed for off-road use. It's designed to carry stuff -- on streets.

I don't see myself mountain biking on my 7700 FX though really.

A hybrid is not a mountain bike. It's a bike that can also be used on bike paths and light trails (limited off-road), but it's not intended to be used for mountain bike riding.

Utility bikes predate pavement. They can go on dirt.
WCoastPeddler
09-07-09, 08:31 PM
Perhaps (depending upon your definition of said bicycle), but modern utility bikes don't predate pavement and the road is their intended usage. They certainly are not made to go off-road (which is where hybrids are intended to go). At any rate, utility bikes are not hybrid bikes, that's why they have their own name.

At 29 pounds for a very basic 1 speed coaster brake steel bike it sounds to me like the "American Steel" used is Hi Tension steel, basically a medium carbon steel as has been used on lower end steel bikes for most of their history.
Considerably more expensive than a Worksman bike which is also American made and which is available in multiple sizes and with numerous factory options.

I like this hybrid and at 29 lbs with gas pipe steel construction, it's probably more durable and better suited for off road use than 90% of today's hybrids! LOL!
