I was surfing (the t.v. :( ) when I fell upon a Humphrey Bogart flick. Florida, 1930's - 1940's...
In a street scene, in the space of 30 seconds, I counted eight bicyclists.
8! 3 travelling one way, 3 travelling the other, then 2 more, who stopped right in the middle of the lane behind a stopped car!
Some of those cyclists were women who were actually showing their tummies! You know, '40's style.
These cyclists were following the same rules as cars, especially the pair that were riding side-by-side who stopped behind a car in the center of the lane.
I guess no drivers today watch old movies. But that's exactly what I do! I try to pull in behind the next vehicle at the light.
(It bugs me when a car tries to pull in around me. But I'm talking too much, now...)
Several times I have pulled up at the front of an intersection and taken my place in the tread area of a
cars left wheel (Aus) only to have some moron squeeze between me and the car in the next lane. At this point I
normally give the driver a glare as if to say "three into two doesn't work" they stare back blankly without any
idea how close to me they actually are. This ONLY seems to happen when I'm on the front row of traffic lights.
When I sit a few cars back (no room to move to the front) people will always sit behind me. Depending on the
intersection I will either go right to the front or sit back in line like a car would.
In general if I know the road
narrows after the lights I will sit back so I can take the lane more easily, If the road widens up I will
usually go to the front. When I really think about it, I prefer to sit about 4 cars back, this gives me time to
clip-in (LOOK pedals) as they start to slowly roll forward. When I'm at the front I feel a bit apprehensive, as the first car
accelerates pretty hard and this gives me zero time to clip-in, unless I start while the light is still red.
Either way, I have NEVER been abused so I must be doing something right.
CHEERS.

The sheer numbers of bikes on the road, with traffic, in a popular movie (of the times,) made me cheer.
I'm always curious when I see footage of people in Asia riding ALL over the cities, thousands of people on bikes.
How does the system work there? Do cars give them hassles or do the bikes have right of way?
I can't imagine our city having that many bikes on the road, although it would be fantastic.
CHEERS.

Here on the Gold Coast we have a relatively large Asian population and for the most part they are the most polite and considerate drivers you could ever want to see. Somehow I get the feeling that might have something to do with it. And of course, I'd suggest they don't have the same fuel subisidies as the so-called "western" countries.
