While on my way to the New Castle Farmer's Market, about 10 miles from my home in Wilmington, DE, I decided to have lunch at Aunt Bumpy's, my latest food find. While I was enjoying my BarBQue Ribs, collard greens, and beans, someone was helping
themselves to my bike locked outside. Imagine my shock and dismay when I came out and found the bike gone, without a trace. I had my cell phone so I called 911, thinking "what a waste of time." The cops arrived in about 5 mins. They wasted no time and told me to get in the car "quick." We sped off with siren blaring. They told me they had
already recovered the bike. It was stopped by the first police car that saw it without me on it. That bike is so conspicuous, and since I ride it everyday, in all weather, all the police of Wilmington know me, even though they don't know my name. While they were talking to the boys who took it the call came from dispatch that it was stolen. When we
arrived at the scene, there was the bike leaning against a wall, and three young teens in handcuffs. My relief was immeasurable. It was almost comical, because they could not ride the bike, since none of them was tall enough to reach the pedals. I checked the lock cable and it wasn't cut or damaged. I thought I locked it, but I guess I didn't. There was no damage to the bike at all. Since I didn't see the culprits take the bike, I can't press charges, but they are charged with possession of stolen property, and a few other things. From now on I'm taking the portable burglar alarm with me and arming it every time I lock up the bike. The gods are smiling on me today. Thanks to all the police in Wilmington DE.
