i have recently purchased a used single speed/fixed gear bike with a flip flop hub and i am trying to flip the hub so that the bike becomes fixed gear. i am trying to remove the piece that you switch to the other side opf the wheel and i am having some difficulty. either it is screwed on ridiculously tight or there is a special way to remvove it. does anyone have any advice for me? thanks

i think hes trying to remove the sprocket. it would be easier to buy a seperate sprocket for each side, but if not you will definatley need a chain whip if its on tight and you would clamp the chaipwhip down after wraping around the sprocket and turn the wheel...

If that's what he's trying to do, he doesn't really understand what a flip/flop hub does. He states:

i am trying to flip the hub so that the bike becomes fixed gear

This implies that the hub currently has a single freewheel installed. Moving this to the other side of the hub won't make it a fixed gear!

The idea behind a flip/flop hub is that you can have 2 different cog sizes or fixed cog on one side, freewheel on the other and switch between them by flipping the wheel around. If you don't have the other option installed on the other side of the hub, you won't accomplish anything by flipping the wheel around.
