Bicycle Mechanics - chain skip

Well decided to replace my 9 speed chain today...i did....got ready for a nice ride and as soon as i apply tension the chain skips on the cassette.....i really dont think it is moving up or down.....just skipping

took it into a lbs and he said i needed to replace my cassette...bought the tools and the parts and put it together...same thing

i have checked for a stuck link.....adjusted linkage....any ideas?

It's common for a new chain to skip or climb out of a worn sprocket under tension. But often what seems to be skipping is actually something very different.

Sometimes people think the chain is skipping on the cassette, and spend lots of time and money trying to fix that only to find it's skipping off the chainring. It might also not be skipping off, but not engaging smoothly because of RD alignment or trim.

To solve your problem, you have to try to duplicate it while watching. Stand the bike with the front wheel against a wall and apply pressure to the pedals and look to see if the chain is shifting it's position or climbing higher onto the tips of the teeth on either the chainring or cassette.

With the wheel off the ground, run the bike through the gears and see if the chain is crisply engaging each cassette sprocket, or hesitating or riding on the tops of the teeth.

With a bit of careful observation you'll know the exact nature of the problem, and that'll help you look for the specific cause.

how many miles on this bike? you don't have a worn chainring do you?

Do you stll have the old chain? If so, measure its "stretch" with a 12" ruler or tape measure. It'd be a datapoint to consider.

the answer...i broke off the good part into the chain and the "guide" was holding the chain in place......well next time i know....thanks!
