Mountain Biking - Popo use mtn bikes? Why?

The bike police around here use MTB's as well. It allows them to hop on and off curbs and lets them ride easily on the grass around parks, etc. Plus they are well suited to carry around cargo.

Our cops use MTB's.

It would be silly for law enforcement to use anything else.

Side note- In the pic you can see how very effective rubber donuts are in protecting the top tube.

Yep, mountain bikes. About a month ago I saw two bicycle cops pull a motorcycle over. They guy totally deserved it; it was pretty awesome.

Yep some of them are quite capable riders at that.

NO doubt, I've ridden with some of the local force. They got skillz off road too. Even the Segway Patrol uses off road tires.

The blue, red, and black treks in the original post are merely the 2005 Trek 4500. I had one just like it for several years. I don't know that you can buy police specific bikes but I have seen old frames and bikes with a police paint scheme for sale second hand.

Do the popos in your city/town use mtn bikes or another type of bike? I would think it would be smarter if they used a hybrid instead. Or perhaps a brakeless fixie.

Here are some NYPD issued bikes.

They were locking up at St. Marks street to grab Chipotle. Not too smart using cuffs as locks. What if they need to make an arrest? They'll take off their shoes and use their shoelaces?

A cop on a brakeless fixie? Those are ******** bikes and to put a "popo" on one would be stupid, as well as violating laws in many cities.

If they need to arrest a guy, they probably have those zip ties, there were twice as many cops as handcuffs used, and they could always just pistol whip the guy till he's out for a minute while they retrieve the cuffs from their bikes.

The cops in Montreal ride Rocky Mountain. Some of them are quite fit as I caught up to a pace line moving along at 35kph on an mup after dark. They were heading back to the station and ran at that speed for 12km and yes, they had lots of lights.

Yes, and the motocops have mad skills, too.

They need all-terrain bikes for, well... ALL TERRAIN. They need to have bike handling skills like riding down stairs, bunnyhopping and other manuevers without that sucker snapping in half.

Have you ever tried to tase someone while riding a road bike. I don't think so.

As many people have said, some of these bike cops are pretty good riders. Case in point: Fat cyclist. He recently wrote up a good description of his daily shift.

Agreed it would be pretty stupid, but think of the street cred of riding around on a police bike, especially among the adolescent. I think some of the kids I've seen in NYC are stupid enough to try to steal a police bike.

Anyone else notice that all the reflectors were removed? Not that I don't do it myself but as far as setting an example....
