I'm thinking of getting a Trek 1200 road bike (hey, I don't have a bike - this would be the first bike I bought for myself), but I gather that new models are about to be released. Anyone know when the new Trek bikes will come out (the Trek 1500/1200/1000)? Thanks!

Someone in an LBS that carries Trek can give you a better answer, but I toured the Trek plant last week and can tell you that they had the '05s in production and were scrambling to get models ready for the bike shows. The models you are asking about are made over seas and I would guess they might be available a little earlier than the high end models made in the states. The tour guide did say that they were excited about the '05 models because there were a number of changes. For that reason I'd at least try and wait until you see the specs for the new ones and then decide if it is worth the wait or get a better deal on an '04. Good luck.

I toured the Trek plant last week.

How about some technical details. How do they make those frames? How long does it take to "make" a bike? What sort of aero upgrades are coming? DETAILS please!

Just a quick question pertaining to the '05 treks.

I'm looking at a 2200 at my LBS(which they're giving me a hell of a deal on) and i'm itching to get on a new bike. The bike is a 2004 and i'm debating on whether or not to buy this one, or hold out for the 2005. I haven't heard of any changes that are going to be made to this model or the release date. The LBS called trek, the guy told them "we're having trouble getting ultegra components from shimano, the '05 road bikes won't be out until late fall."

Everyone think it's okay to buy the '04?

thanks guys.

Last year, I pre-bought an '04 1500 in July. It didn't come in until the first week of Sept! They have a waiting list a mile long and it's 1st come, 1st serve on the list. If I were really interested in seeing the new ones, I'd have my bike guy order one pre-sold and see if you like it. I LOVE the 1500, it's a lot of bike for the money!

Just my opinion!

It was kind of a speed walk through the process from the raw tubing to the paint booth so I can't provide a lot of detail. The fellow who walked us through was more than willing to answer questions but it did appear we were taking him from his usual duties so we didn't drag it out too much.

Anyway the coolest part was watching the robotic lazers cut the mating surfaces of the tubing. I think Trek and Cannondale are the only mfgs with that technology. Another interesting detail were all of the booths of welders, each doing a specific joint or section of the frame. Then some had the welds ground smooth and the first heat treatment was done (these were alum frames). Then on to the alignment checks/adjustments, and back for the longer heat treatment and on to the paint/decal stage.

He explained the carbon fiber molding process and handed me a frameset that the Blue Train is riding now in France. It weighed next to nothing! The titanium area was enclosed to keep contaminents out, so we didn't see that. They also make Lemond and Gary Fisher bikes at this plant.

The ship the framesets to another town in WI for assembly and wheels, so it was hard to ID any models or changes from what we saw. I don't know the time lag between these plants, but I would guess a frame gets through the line in a day or two. Maybe longer if held up with quality control checks.

That's about all I can tell you other than the fact that seeing 5 of Lances TDF bikes and a yellow jersey hanging in the lobby is worth the stop alone. Including the crash bike from last year where you could see the crack in the chain stay, and wonder how he finished and won that stage. I'd recommend a stop if you are in the area (Waterloo is East of Madison about 20 miles)

Is the 2005 bike going to be 10-speed Ultegra? If so, then it'll be up to you to decide if you want the 10-speed or 9-speed. If you don't care then I'd say get the 2004 with the money savings, which is what I'd do anyway. Either way, you'll be getting a nice bike.
