Today, I did an old school kind of workout today. My parents called and said that their help that they had arranged for had not shown up and they needed someone to "buck" hay bales for them. I have not bucked hay since I was 16 years old. Now I remember why, that is a lot of work. It turned out to be quite a good work out. I was sweating just as hard as if I were in the gym, and I could tell that my heart rate was getting up there. I did several tons which is not to bad for a guy in his mid 40's. So, just a friendly reminder that there are other kinds of workouts beside the bike and gym. I think I will forget the gym tomorrow since this just plain whipped my tail today. :o

We heat with, mostly, wood. The cutting splitting and stacking is a great workout. We usually stack it still in need of splitting. That way I have to go out and split each day's load during the winter. It's all done by hand and is a great way to burn some calories during winter in the great North.

Yea, splitting wood, digging - all of that equals or even beats the gym. The plus is, there is some result to the effort, not just burned calories. I work currently in small car shop - same thing, to make living with your hands.

I was a little stiff this morning, but nothing I could not deal with. I was however feeling a little drained. Between the Oregon Clyde ride on Saturday and doing the hay yesterday, it was a little bit much. At least my folks and sister got the hay in and it is done. My sister stuffed some money in my pocket and I told her to keep it. She insisted that I keep it and buy something for the bike. So how could I refuse that offer. :D

HP - Bucking hay is indeed a good workout. Sounds like you remembered all the little tricks to keep back from becoming too stoved up. I think I would have a tough time bucking a few tons of hay as I am less than 365 away from 50! In my 20s I thought it was kind of fun.... Funny how your perspective changes.
