I have a chance to buy this for $20. The only information I have is that it's a Peugeot 10 speed that is at least 15-20 years old. I don't own any road bikes. Would this be a worthwhile project?

Seriously, that would make a great project bike. It appears to be in pretty good shape so you shouldn't be out too much cash to fix her up.

i have a 12 speed fuji circa 1982 that is of similiar quality and it works just fine for getting around. i don't think you will regret buying that bike.
just goes to show you can get around at a pretty cheap cost, and don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a bike.

I'm going to say early to mid eighties. Although, it could be a little older than that (I'm just judging by the gradient sticker on the seat tube).

Agree. I wouldn't put a lot of money into it--it will never be a classic or collector's bike--but it should work for years as a good, reliable, fun bike. Figure on tires, tubes, brake pads, plus at least grease for the bearings, or maybe new bearings (not very expensive). Pull the cables, lube them and slide them back in, adjust everything and ride for five years.

Wheels spin true? Everything seem to work? Either way, grab it fast if you want a classic lugged steel frame road bike. For inexpensive tires try Niagara. They sell 27" tires for as low as $5 each, which is alot cheaper than Wal-Mart even...just watch shipping & handling...buy what you need all in one order if possible.

Yes it will be a wothwhile project and as long you dont dump a ton of money into it it'll hold its value.
Figure $10 each for tires, $12 for cables, $10 for bar tape and maybe $20 for a seat. Consider those to be 'local' prices.

The stem-mounted shifters indicate a lower-end bike. However, those old Puegeots seem to roll forever.
If the hubs and bottom bracket need rebuilding, which is not unlikely for a bike this old, then you'll shell out more money yet unless you can do the work yourself.
