Cyclocross - New Thomson Stem - Road or MTB?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm getting a new Thomson stem for my Cross bike - so road or MTB. Road has a 2 bolt face, MTB a 4 bolt, that seems to be the major difference.
Thanks

Either should probably work just fine. I'd go with the 4 bolt if you want to use a carbon bar, otherwise the two bolt road stem should be fine unless you're particularly hard on your equipment.

I used a X2 Road stem on my XC mtb with a carbon bar with no problems. Should hold up for cross
Thanks guys, not that hard on stuff, doubt I'll switch to a carbon bar anytime soon.

I was assuming that you're using an OS (31.8) clamp. If you're not using a 31.8 clamp bar then it would matter but if it's 31.8 no worries.

My experience with the road version was that although it was light and stiff, there just wasn't enough material there to clamp evenly. Metal fatigue set in after about 10,000 miles, and it wouldn't clamp the steerer tube evenly anymore. I swapped mine for a Ritchey WCS.
