I picked up biking as a hobby a few months ago and ride around 12 to 15 miles every day. I have been riding a Raleigh mountain bike that I got when I was 9, and I am looking to replace it with something that is more appropriate for what I use it for now that I am 20. I am 5' 8" with a 31" inseam and I'm using a bike with a 16" frame, which I have been informed is too small.

Since I am riding on roads, and do little to no off-road cycling, should I purchase a bike that is not a mountain bike? How do I know what size bike to buy? I am a college student and probably can't spend more than $300 on a new bike, does that severely limit my options?

Thanks for your help. : )

I would suggest a hybrid bike. If you really dont do offroading, a rigid fork is best. $300 is limiting, but right now there are deals out there since most shops are getting the 2009's out the door to bring in the 2010's. I just got a Specialized Sirrus hybrid for $480, $40 off. I saw lots of specialized Globe Vienna 1 bikes at the same shop, for $329. They look like a nice bike to ride around town and should be comfortable to do 12-15 miles on. If you cant afford new, look on craigslist for used bikes. Find one in good shape thats only a few years old, you can save quite a bit.

You sound about my size, and I feel comfortable on an 18" mountain bike or a 54cm road or hybrid. my inseam is 30", so you MIGHT get away with a 56cm, but will want to stick with 18" mountain bike. But, go get fit at a bike shop to really know what fits YOU.

Riding a bike that doesnt fit you is rather uncomfortable. Go to a good bike shop, and tell them what you want and your price range, They should be able to help!

Depending where you live (i.e. not Florida), you might find some "end of season" deals (bike shop, not Wal-mart!). You could get a better bike used for that amount, if you are patient, off Craigslist. In a road bike, you would probably fit a 21 or 22 inch, or 54-56 cm. Good luck.
