Hello everyone who might come upon this note. I started cycling a year and a half ago when I lived in Vancouver on my father's old Miyata SixTen (with all original parts). I loved how if felt to tool around the mountains on the north shore, so when I moved to Montreal I knew I would forego public transportation for a bike whenever possible. I now make the trip to my university (about 19 km round trip) four or five times a week, plus other rides whenever I can fit them in. Since the bicycle is my primary form of transportation, I decided it was time to learn how to properly maintain and repair one; thus I joined this forum (which has been fantastic). Recently I bought a mid-eighties Norco Monterey that had been neglected in someone's basement for the better part of twenty years. The plan is to rebuild it (probably as a fixed gear, because they look like fun) as a hands-on way of learning the mechanics of a bike. So far so good; it's been disassembled (with the exception of the bottom bracket, because I don't have the tools to take it apart) and cleaned. Now I just need to put it back together! We'll see how that turns out.
Anyway, all this is simply to say that this place has been a fantastic source of information for me in my mechanical infancy (between BikeForums and Sheldon Brown's website, I've been more well informed than I could have hoped). Thanks everybody.
