Hi all. I'm interested in installing shorter cranks on my bike. Right now it has a Shimano 9-speed 105 triple crankset, FC-5503. The BB works just fine, I'm just wondering what the crank capability might be. Does anyone know what type of BB shipped with this crankset? I think they date to 1999 or so. Is it easiest to just stick with Shimano offerings, perhaps used Ultegra or Dura-Ace? Thanks!

5503 should have used the Shimano BB-5500 BB.

Thanks. So that means either finding some used Shimano cranks or just replacing the whole crankset/BB assembly altogether, right?

The latest and greatest uses a different bearing assembly.
