I used to race about 8 years ago I stopped because of back pain since then I've pretty much been a commuter rider on a cushy voodoo mtnbk. lately I've been hanging out with some old roadie friends and am getting the bug again, not for racing but for serious riding. My questioin is I'd like to get a new bike for less than 2k, I was wondering what might be a help to my back (besides a really good fit of course) I hate to sound like a tri-geek but those softrides do seem to make sense, I also really like the slingshots more weird than geek, or I could get carbon fiber for more of the realbike look but carbon fiber shock absorbsion. Any suggestions? bye the way my old bike was a bianchi so in my heart I am an italian steel lover.

I sympathize with you, as I had the same fears. But I don't think it's the bike, as much as what you do off of the bike.
If you suffer from back pain (I used to), you need to make sure you're stretching, every day. It doesn't take long, ten minutes a day, tops. But if you make the effort to thoroughly stretch your back, you'll hurt a lot less.
Research back stretches on the net, and you'll find a wealth of info. Give it a week or so, and you'll notice a huge improvement.
