I might be getting a gig in Thousand Oaks, CA, but I need to keep expenses to a minimum. Does anyone know how to get there from LAX on public transportation? I searched the net but couldn't find any details.

Have you looked into Metrolink?

On the right side of the page, enter your info and get some options.

You could also try for a Super Shuttle...cost you a bit more but much faster.

Go to this page for Metrolink (http://www.metro.net/index.asp) and put "LAX" in the start, "Thousand Oaks" in the destination fields in the upper right hand corner, select a departure or arrival time, and it will provide a list of metrolink connections for the route.

Unless it has changed dramatically in the past few years, public transportation to or from TO sucks. I think Nesdog's suggestion of a Super Shuttle is the best option here.

There are free shuttles between LAX and Burbank Airport as well. Don't know what, if any, interim stops they may make. Can you just hail Supper Shuttle?? I thought you had to schedule ahead for their service.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the shuttle is probably my best bet - saw where you can reserve it online.

There's a bus that goes from LAX to Union Station for like $7 os so. I think it goed every half hour or so. It's called Flyaway or something like that. Then from Union Station, I think Metrolink might get you near TO, but I'm not positive.
There's certainly no good direct route other than one of the shuttle services. There are some kiosks at LAX to look them up, Super Shuttle is the most famous, though usually not the cheapest.
Or, you could try the Deadhead method like my brother. He finds a hotel close to where he wants to go and uses their free or low cost shuttle. He gets to the lobby and then ducks out the back door on his way.
I don't know about bike transport on any of those forms of transpo if that's an issue.
When I get to a computer in the morning, I could maybe throw you a few links.
Will this be a one time deal or a regular commute? Bringing a bike? Those answers may change your best option.
Woodiville, like Redhook? Mmmmmmm

The closest the Metrolink will get to TO is Simi Valley... about 5-10 miles away from whereever the OP is trying to get. Not a bad ride if the OP will have that available :D

Yep, Woodinville like Redhook. The brewery is right off the Sammamish River trail and has been the demise of more than one rider. One of my riding buddies fell into the habit of stopping there after rides, then during rides, and went from 180 lbs to 216 over the summer.

If things go well it will be a regular commute; if so I'll bring a bike down around the end of Sept.

Probably bring the bike in a box with my helmet, shoes, etc. and have to get it to the hotel first, so I'll need to shuttle it there.

I'm still waiting for confirmation on the gig.

What kind of gig and when? If it's music, I might be interested in seeing.

Not that interesting - it's software. My sister got the music gene.

Interesting, I should be going through Woodinville about next Tuesday or Wednesday. Which days is the rain scheduled for??

Interesting, I should be going through Woodinville about next Tuesday or Wednesday. Which days is the rain scheduled for?? Woodinville forecast - Wednesday through Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers. Highs near 70. Lows in the lower 50s.

Tuesday should be mostly cloudy.

I spent a real good afternoon at the brewery some years back.

Weather report for Seattle and area - If you can't see Mt Rainier, it's raining. If you can see the mountain, it's about to rain.

rent a cheap car - much cheaper than a shuttle plus you really need one to get around here.

Is a shuttle really that expensive?

I think it was probably more of a comment on the non-existence of good public transportation in and especially around Thousand Oaks. Plus, a shuttle from LAX is probably going to cost about $40 anyway, maybe more.

True, the OP will find a car to be very useful in the Conejo Valley.

It turns out that there was some mis-communication, coupled with my lack of familiarity with the area. It's not LAX, but Bob Hope Airport, and there is an Amtrak that goes from Moorpark to there. At any rate, the gig fell through. The reason came down to expenses - I was going to have to go out-of-pocket for a bit too much, and spend a lot of my time traveling (and not riding my bike). Man, this economy sucks!

For you Redhook fans, I took this yesterday at the brewery (posted in the Road Cycling forum)
