who misses the lost at of the car chase, or the lost are of the fight scene.
within a rare exception, there have been a lot fewer chase movies in the past ten years.
Are car companies not funding them any more? does gas cost too much, i miss chase movie.
hell we could do one on bikes if it came down to it.

Bullit. Best car chase ever.
so was the original gone in 60 seconds
don't forget ronin, the camera work during the chase scene in that movie is quite something.
everyone is trying to be creative or avoid all together the car chase scene to not be called a blatant rip off.
bullitt, ronin, gone in sixty seconds (1974, although the 2000 version wasn't that bad either)...
instead you have these digital 'stunts', dare I say stunts, because it's just CG, like you have in transporter, fast and furious that is everything a car can't do and is just unbelievable in a crappy way.
closest good chase scenes, in a very loose term, recently that come to mind are Driven, death race (really long shot) and dark knight (cool, but still CG).
oh and fight scenes aren't lost. they're just in chinese movies.

Anybody remember Vanishing Point? I saw it when it came out. Can't remember any details but I remember I like the movie.

I miss the lost art of makeup effects. They were pretty much perfected in the 80s but then they discovered CGI and now they spam it up no matter how crappy and out of place it looks.

Remember the chase in the Diry Harry movie, The Dead Pool, where DH is being chased through the streets of San Francisco by a radio-controlled miniature car packed with explosives?
Who says size matters?

CGI has killed special effects. full stop.
imagine the helicopter scene in Apocalypse Now done with CGI. :twitchy:

I'd always heard that....so we rented and watched the movie (first time) a few months ago. You know.....I think its one of those things that was great in its day, but doesn't hold up to modern day. But because its old everybody ASSUMES its better.
We weren't too impressed with the car chase.....or even the whole movie, much, to be honest. Which really bugged me because I LOVE Steve McQueen.

A good example is the 1982 version of The Thing. No computer effects, all puppets and foam rubber and stop-motion... And it looks great. Granted, there are times when you can tell it's all done that way, but nothing compared to the "oh, it's all done in a computer, meh" feeling one would get watching a version of it made today.

I think Bullitt is more real than most action movies now. The cars, barreling through San Fran, don't jump as though there's a ramp, they act like real cars going over real hills. McQueen actually messed up a corner and they decided to leave it in. The movie is quiet and simple in its extras. There didn't need to be a lot of stuff going on around it.
I think the Bourne series is as close to the older action movies as I've seen recently.

It may have been one of those cases where you hear about it so much for so long you have unrealistic expectations.
Yes, Bourne was pretty good.

Yeah, that could be.
I don't think any movie can really top On Any Sunday for action, though. And it's got Steve McQueen! :P

Introduced wifey to "The Great Escape" recently....one of my favorite McQueen movie characters.
steve mcqueen just carries a certain amount of bad ass with him.
no one mentioned "the cannonball run"
and yes "quantum of solace" had several nice chase scenes. like the one on foot.
I also really liked kill bill. but they paid homage to and took from several older movies that were considered genre setting. and the hitman in grosse point blank. was benny urquidez, he is on the list of people I would shot in a dark alley no questions asked.

lastly I am surprised none of the tony jaa films made it on this thread, anyone who appreciated the fight scene from old boy will like this one, it was shot on one camera. in one take http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXIGP6_fNZk

The Bourne Trilogy movies had great car chases and great fight scenes...all FMA based, too...choreographed by Sifu Dan Inosanto's guys, IIRC.
