Foo - Polarized Sunglasses - Or Am I Still Crazy?

I have always had prescription sunglasses, but they have only been simply tinted until I recently got actual polarized sunglasses.

Right away, I noticed a lot of quirks with them, but I have never heard anyone talk about these quirks, despite millions of people wearing polarized sunglasses. I did a quick search online and some of my observations are true, and some I couldn't find anything about:

LCD screens disappear--I guess this is normal because of the vertical something-rather in the lenses. But it's really annoying. I either have to turn my head, or take my sun glasses off when using a digital camera or laptop outside.

Car windows have spots if they are tinted--and if I turn my head, I can't see through car windows at all! I couldn't find anything about this online.

I can see through yellow clothes! No joke. Yesterday, the attractive neighbor lady came outside so our babies could play together and she was wearing a yellow shirt with nothing under it and I could see through it perfectly as though she had nothing on. I took my sunglasses off and it looked like a normal shirt. I put my sunglasses back on and I could see through it again. My wife, who has just tinted sunglasses, didn't notice a thing, so I thought I was just crazy. But, I looked it up, and polarized sunglasses have something green in them to filter yellow light, thus I could see through her yellow shirt as though she wasn't wearing one.

How come I have never heard about this stuff? Clearly other FOOsters have polarized sunglasses--what other quirks are there? I also read to be extra careful in the snow with polarized lenses since it could create a hazard. What?

Seeing through one's shirt is more of a perk than a quirk.

Personally I don't like polarized lenses. They're great on water and that's about it. I think tempered glass is the issue with the "dots" in glass. However, I'm very curious about this yellow shirt thing.

I have to admit that I have a love-hate relationship with them. When it's very sunny, they are absolutely wonderful and everything is so clear as though there is no bright sun. But, I hate how some things look distorted if your head isn't on perfectly straight, and sometimes it hurts my eyes. But, I love them more than I hate them.

Good point another poster made about the fabric having to do with seeing through the neighbor's shirt. Obviously she wasn't the first person with a yellow shirt I have seen, but it was the first yellow shirt I saw through. That being said, without the sunglasses on, I couldn't see through her shirt whatsoever.

A polarized transmissive filter is only transparent to incident waves that have the same polarization.

For example, a circularly polarized plane wave can be thought of as having a vertical and horizontal component. Linearly polarized glasses will only allow 1/2 of that incident wave to pass through, and will scatter the other half.

Similarly, there is right hand and left hand circular polarization, and it's possible to have both left hand and right hand polarized filters. So you can do all kinds of crazy things by playing with polarized filters, depending upon how they are configured.

Here's a neat trick... take your glasses out late in the afternoon or early in the morning, and look 90 degrees off the centerline to the Sun. Rotate the glasses until the blue sky turns black.

I cannot use my lazer beam vision on my adversaries when wearing polarized glasses. However, my polarized glasses do give me the ability to sing the Catalina Magdalena Hoopensteiner Wallendiner Hogan Logan Bogan was her name song at ludicrous speed.

I can tell who's going to feel their sunburn really bad in a couple hours. When I look down at the road, I also get a slight 3-D effect. Neat stuff.

Oh, you also have to be careful with laser pointers. If you aim a laser pointer through polarized glasses, it can shoot down planes.

Planes at a 90 degree angle from the one you're aiming at, that is.

i notice the lcd thing A LOT. i've also noticed seeing through yellow shirts. and seeing funny things in car windows... it's a strange thing.

I've noticed that most LCD screens now don't have that problem with disappearing when viewed through polarized glasses. The manufacturers have gotten smart and in most cases orient their screens the right way so there's not an issue.

lcd screens have polarization filters. when u look through something else
that is polarized you need to be lined up.

take off the glasses, spin them around, look through the lens up close again,
but rotate the lens, you will see dark-to-light when you view an lcd screen.

car windows have polarized tint. the spots you see are the variations in the
direction and intensity of the polarization at those spots. you can see people
inside other cars better when wearing polarized glassed since you block out most
of the external light reflections

funny thing is i noticed the "seeing through yellow shirts" with my own shirt, which happens to be the one i'm wearing in my avatar.

i've noticed that with some. for example, at my work we use *** systems that are ancient-ish. so when i walk into work to clock in, i realize i'm wearing my prescription sunglasses because the screen looks all wavy (as in black and white waves). but then i'll go into a school computer lab and use a computer, i'll see fine except when i turn my head to the side, i'll notice the screen goes black depending on what part of the lens i'm looking through.

I drive a Cady CTS. I wear non-prescription polarized sunglasses.

I see spots when looking through the passenger side window.

I can not see through the drivers side window at a level angle, if I tilt my head it is clear.

The in dash GPS works fine, unless I lean over to adjust it, then it goes blank.

I am really bummed that I have never been able to see though my neighbor's yellow dress!

I got my first pair of polarized sunglasses about three summers ago. They were Ray-Bans with black plastic frames and gray-tinted lenses. I was working outside quite a bit then, and those glasses were like a blessing. They cut the number of headaches I suffered from glare almost in half. Sadly, the frame broke out of warranty this summer.

Since then, I've bought a few pairs of polarized Foster-Grants at WalMart. That can be a crapshoot, and I blame it on Walmart and their displays rather than FG and their manufacturing. The lenses seem to have alot of optical distortions. I send them back to FG under warranty, and the pairs they send me to replace them are fine.

That yellow shirt/dress thing warrants further study... LOL

And, if you wear them behind a curved, full face, plastic, motorcycle helmet shield, behind a curved plastic motorcycle windshield - you will see what LSD is all about........
