Well, I found out that in North Carolina its not about take the bite (going down) its about getting BIT.

I was out MTBing here on the NC Coast by my house last week and prior to entering my local trails I ran across this monster Canebrake (Timber) Rattlesnake. It scared the S*** out of me. I thought to myself well it might have been a fluke. A local came out and put a cap in it!
Yesterday afternoon While riding on the same trail I was pumping hard down this trail I looked up and there on the trail was a Copperhead. Yes, It scared the S*** out of me. At this point and time I think I might hang my bike up for awhile and do some road riding! There is no interest in riding with Combat Boots on carrying a Gun!

Does using Lizard Skins accessories help repel snakes?

Some years around here seem to be good for snakes, all snakes. I remember 2006, Early in the year (for snakes) I was mushroom hunting and wandered into a nest of moccasins. Running cross country trails a little later in the year I noticed a lot of king snakes, even later that year, on road rides I saw a lot of copperhead road kill. Oh and the black snakes were extremely fat and sassy that year. Just an observation from an Ole country boy.

Personally I don't mind people killing the poisonous ones. Used to be standard practice where I grew up in Arkansas. Not PC but who cares.

A few monthes back I ran completely over a red, yellow and black kingsnake stretched across the trail. I was going to fast to slow down. Scared the hell out of me until I realized what it was.

You're in PA? There be rattlers in them there hills buddy. Saw one last year at Rockport in the Lehigh Gorge...was right next to the cinder MUP/rail trail that runs the lenght of the gorge. Some crazy dude caught it and then released it again right by the path. There have been rattlers seen at Lunch Rock on the Lehigh river this year as well (lunch rock is where a lot of kayakers and rafters stop to eat).

Seriously, there's no need to kill the snakes, it's not like you're going to make an appreciable difference any ways as far as safety is concerned, and you actually are less safe in doing so. All it does is tamper with the ecosystem. After that dead snake, there will be increased populations of its prey, like mice or lizards, and decreased food sources for their predators lie hawks, owls, mammals, etc. This will continue throughout the foodweb and throw everything out of balance. Bikers are supposed to respect the areas they bike in, not eradicate them. I'm not poinnting the finger at anyone, either

I enjoy and respect nature but If I do see another while biking I will put a cap in it. That is one less pitviper I have fear. If you get hit by one trust me you will know it. I would rather deal with hawks, Owls, lizards and anything else in nature but never a deadly snake.

Well, While in my travels today I ran across another Canebrake WTF! I think I need to wait until Nov ( when they hide) to ride again.

Can't you hop over these snakes? Grow a set and get some skills. Really man killing animals because your scared of them isn't cool.

there are snakes everywhere, does not mean they are going to eat you. just keep going stop somewhere else.

A serious question.

What did the snake do to you in order to make you want to kill one in the future? Because of your size compared to its, it's probably more afraid of you than you are of the snake. I'm not here to chastise you, I just really want to know the reason to consider taking its life so easily.

Two preschool children at home and a timber rattler under the front porch; choice is easy. 'Nuff said.

That's certainly a different story. I mean out on the trail while the bike is moving.

This is what can happen from a canebrake snake bite! Just a little taste of running over one can do. Like I said before, If encountered, I will put a cap in it so I won't harm anyone.

Yeah a rabid rott on the road can get you, or space junk falling from the sky. I carry pepper spray for dogs. Can't do much for space debris I guess. But I will never carry a gun for snakes. Maybe bear, Wild boar, but I'm gonna play the odds with snakes. I think your over dramatizing just a bit.
How many times has anyone in your extended family been bit?

Does pepper spray work on snakes? Seriously. Snakes in South Louisiana are no joke.

By butt:lol:

MBAction did a "Mythbusters" series with this on it. You're not gonna run it over in a way that it's gonna be thrown up around your neck...if you are getting ready to run it over...pick your feet up by the bars...or just hop over it.

I helped a Copperhead off the trail (with a long stick) at the Mansion one day. He wasn't doing anything...just getting some sun. What if you're lady was just chilling in a bikini...some freakin' giant 40 foot tall, two wheeled alien vehicle came along and saw her...got scared...lazer-beamed her into a pile of bikini ashes?

Would it piss ya of a bit?

Pepper spray wont affect the eyes that's for sure. Snakes have 'eye caps' which are like a hard contact lens over their eyes. They have no eyelids.

Snakes strike for two reasons. To eat and if they feel threatened.

Snakes are cool. No arms and no legs. And they survive. :)
