Road Cycling - Is this a good bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey
I want to start road cycling and i need a road bike, however i dont want to spend loads of money on my first bike. They have this used bike at a bike shop going for about 350 however i dont know if its any good or not. Its a Miele Alfa, Yellow with a few upgrades (shimano pedals, front set(what they use in time trials)). But i dont know anything about the bike so want some input on it and other choices that i may want to take a look at. I'm from Calgary Alberta and want to know where i can get into some individual road races.
Thanks
Seb
Welcome to BikeForums.
Since this is your first road bike, visit a few bike shops and look at some other new (not used) bikes and test ride any that you like. Tell the bike shop owner what type of riding you'll be doing, where you'll ride, how many miles, how often, your goals, your budget, etc. and ask for suggestions. Unfortunately you may have trouble finding many decent entry-level bikes in the sub-$500 range.

It was hard to find a bike under $500 that would be enjoyable to ride in 1991 when I was starting to race. However, what you get for your money at $600 is incredible these days.
I agree with the other poster...go to a good local bike shop and take your time finding a ride you can live with for a while.
