I'm planning a solo ride at the end of September from NYC to North Conway, NH, to climb the Presidential Traverse, then ride back to NYC. I have two weeks to do this, and plan to ride about 60 miles a day. That figures 5 1/2 days each way on the bike, and 2 days for the Presidential Traverse. Any help will be greatly appreciated in planning a route. Once I figure out the route, I need to figure out where to stash my bike for two days while I climb. I’ll be carrying camp gear, and plan to camp all the way, and if necessary, guerrilla camp, so routes that go near or through state park or private campgrounds will be a definite plus. I'm not adverse to taking Metro North to New Haven CT or Poughkeepsie NY and start riding from there to save time trying to get out of NYC. Thanks.

+1 on Metro North to New Haven. There are countless country roads to take once you've cleared New Haven pretty much all the way up. Google CT bicycle map. That should help you get started. Also, if possible, allow yourself more time.

That's a hella trip, with LOTS of hills.
+1 on the CT Bike Map. You can get it for free from CTDOT.

One way to start mapping it is to use Google Maps, enter the start and end points, and then select walking from the dropdown (says 'By Car').

Once you get to N Conway, drop into the EMS store. They should be able to give you suggestions on where to stash your gear while you're climbing

#4 train to Woodlawn and check out the South & North County Trails to Balwin Place. I can send you my cues from Springfield MA to NYC via backroads & rail Trails. Once in Ct the Farmington River Greenway towards Springfield where I can get you further Northward.

PS Get the NYC free bike map and almost any shop or online

+1 on using the Westchester County South and North County trails. Excepting the detour on road in Elmsford, which is all of a mile on Rt 9A to Warehouse Lane, it's something like 50 miles one-way to Carmel, all on bike trail from about Tuckahoe Rd. Getting to Yonkers from Manhattan is easy and heading north from Carmel is nothing but country roads all the way to NH.

I'd also see if you can find a copy of the NY to Boston AIDS ride that ran a few years back and that started at Bear Mt.. That route would get you across Conn. and into Mass. and from there it's probably easy enough to find cue sheets for Mass and NH or to make up the remainder.

My 2 cents..

rent a car or take the train to New England. Ride up to North Conway, and then do your riding in NH. Head over to Burlington, and take a day off. From there, you can either take the ferry across the lake and ride to Lake Placid... or you can go either south (don't forget to visit the fort, it's pretty cool) or north across the islands and then down though the Adirondacks.

I think Presidentials, Kancamangus, Vermont and Adirondacks all together would make for an amazing trip.
