Hello:

I have been contemplating upgrading the drive train on road bike. Currently the bike I have has Shimano 105 components.
My question is, if I ungrade to Ultegra or Dura-ace components do all the components need to be of the same component i.e. rear derailure, front derailure, crankset etc?

Any help would be of great assistance.

No, you can switch things out piece by piece if you stick to groups from the same era. For instance, assuming your 105 is the latest model, you can switch out Ultegra 6000 series components all you want. But to get Dura Ace, you'd need to keep to the last generation of 9 speed group as the latest is 10 speed and a lot of it may not be compatible.
