Northeast - affordable ~$100> raincoat in NYC?

hi all, im doing the century this sunday and it looks like it might rain...i dont even have the proper wear for this if it does happen to rain. so i may need to do some last minute shopping...please suggest any bike store you had good experience with..(queens, or nyc)...

i checked at modells (pgoat) and they only carry columbia brand which doesnt vent at all according to the salesman..

I think if you know you'll be riding it's worth the $. It seems like a lot to spend at first but i use my rain jacket all the time now, not just when It's raining. The windproofing is key - that keeps you so much warmer on the bike.

I once had a beautiful celeste green Bianchi jacket by Nalini (I never used it - way too big so I sold it NWT) That had a light fleece in back and a Mantotex windproof front - that seems like the best design for riding to me - you want to block that harsh cold in front (like when the pro tour guys slip a newspaper under the front of their jerseys at the top of a mountain stage) but you don't want to overheat everywhere else.

But you're just not gonna find that kind of technology in a budget garment, at least not in my experience.

For a long ride in September, a packable jacket is nice too - so you can stash it in a jersey pocket when it warms up later in the day. My rain jacket is not that packable. It'll fit in a small bag but not a small jersey pocket.

Yeah shell out for a decent rain jacket, you'll be glad you did. NYC Velo had a small but nice selection of Gore stuff when I was there a month ago. Paragon also had an okay selection, but they seemed overpriced.

well i ended up with a basic columbia titanium series...it says its water repellent...not so sure about ventilation but i'll find out sunday!

I bought a rain jacket for an event ride a few years ago.
A nice goretex cycling jacket (waterproof and breathes).
Though I don't use it often, when I do it's worth every penny.
Fortunately we won't get to use them on sunday.

I had a Columbia Titanium parka that came with a detachable polarfleece liner. It was great for all kinds of weather. Water used to just roll off the surface. Just be careful about the wash because the water repellence does seem to wash out eventually.

which is interesting, because I've had just that happen with some outerwear after a few washings - but the care tag on some garments say to wash frequently to maintain water repellent functionality. That seems counter intuitive to me, but what the hell do I know:lol:

btw, how was it on the Century ride? Columbia makes pretty decent stuff; I have a fleece or two by them.

Yeah my Showers Pass has a label that says machine washing actually improves performance. If I jump in the machine with it do you think it'll improve my performance too ;)

I was thinking of getting a Shower Pass Jacket, not sure which one to get, was think about the Elite 2 or Hybrid. Are they worth $200.00 +/-?

The lower end is very waterbrooth and maybe a bit less breathable than the $200.00. Botttom line is , you most likely WILL sweat in all of them.

Seems like the same price of $220+/- is it really worth it?

I bought my Showers Pass Elite 2.0 at Paragon, in May, just before the 5 Boro Bike Tour. They were having 30% off Gore and Showers Pass so it came out to about $150.

You might be able to get a 10% discount through NYCC if you buy it directly from Showers Pass.

Depends on whether you care about pockets.
Pockets are a real convenience for holding cell phones, wallet, keys, etc. If you're going to spend all day in the rain stuff may not stay quite as dry as it would inside a zip lock bag, inside a waterproof saddle bag, but your stuff will be much more accessible when you need it.

a bit but not nearly as much as with lower end stuff, in my experience.

btw, mine was just over $200 in Portland a few years back- I don't think they sold them here in NY when i got it. I've seen them online for under $200 in the last year or so.

I find their prices a little bit cheaper than the larger places
and sometimes you will find some nice markdowns.

This place is great! I stumbled upon it a few months ago and I am amazed at the amount of stuff they cram in there and that they exist where they do exist at all.

yep they are awesome...it's a tight squeeze getting through but worth it...make sure to go upstairs and check out all the sale items...good stuff.:thumb:
