I'll be doing my first race this year on a bike with the shift cables on top of the top tube, but I've started to notice CX bikes with the shift cables running under the frame, like a road bike.

For East Coast racing where there will be mud, does it really matter? Or is the top tube placement just a bit of old style CX mythology about keeping the drive train clean?

typically doesnt matter in our climate and terrain but having the cables on the top tube makes it nicer to shoulder a bike when you dont have to grab a downtube with cables on it. weve only had one or two really muddy races in the mid atlantic in the past two seasons where stuff could have got gunked up on bottom routed cabling.
