Decided I need to put some bar ends on my bike and need info on what to look for and what might be available. Basically I think the bars are to wide. When I ride after about seven or eight miles my hands start to get a little numb and I start to ache in the shoulder blades. If I move my hands in about two inches or rotate them 90 degrees so I am cupping the ends of the handlebars everything feels better.

I'd get a Nitto Albatross or porteur bar. For the money you spend on bar ends, wide bars are the ticket to upright riding comfort.

Some shops may be able to cut the handlebars down for you (but be sure that's what you want). Like NormanF mentioned maybe a change in handlebars are in order. I know nashbar has a trekking bar and someone puts out an H bar (I think that's what it was called). There are definetly a lot of bar choices available.

Otherwise on my commuterized mountain bike I have the Ergon GR2. They are an integrated grip with short barends. I also have a pair of ODI Rogue lockon grips with Cane Creek barends II. The Ergons bar ends are magnesium or something and the CC's have some kind of rubberized coating. Ask your LBS what they suggest also. If you do go with replacing the grips make sure you get the right sized ones (trigger shifters v. twist shift).

As of this writing, Nashbar is out of Trekking (Butterfly) handlebars. But Harris Cyclery is now listing them - along with a good selection of other varieties of handlebar:

Seems they are very popular and sought after in view of how quickly they have to post back-order notices.

Get a pipe cutting tool and clip those wings. If you think they are too wide, they are too wide. I don't know what bar ends you should get, but you should get some!

Make sure to leave room for your levers and grips and bar ends before you cut your bars. Measure twice, cut once.

I lean toward the plain old fashioned bar ends. With them you can still attach a rear view mirror in the end of your handlebar.
