Mountain Biking - Riding w/ Music?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I used to. But to be honest I like to hear my bike, so I don't anymore.

Hmm, well I don't on urban stuff. Can't hear cars that way. I also like to hear my fellow riders. I've tried riding with music. I just like yelling stuff at my friends that are up the trail.

You ride with music in an urban setting? Good luck.
If anything it would be a lot safer lisetning to music on the trails rather than on the road.
Never when I ride on the roads, but I do when I'm on the trails. But then again, I still don't play the music very high. I like to hear what's going on around me.
As a side note, I watched one episode of the Lance Chronicles, and Lance was talking about how isolated he felt training in the mountains (I believed it was in Spain?), and just before he took off for his ride, he put on earphones that were connected to his ipod.

full volume, but headphones are on the neck, so can hear music and surrounding :)

Any distraction on a bike can potentially be a deadly distraction.

Never listen to music when on the bike. With the stuff I ride, one can get seriously injured or killed due to lack of attention.
Oakley is prototyping a sunglass design with an integrated MP3 player (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1512853439674831/).
Problem is it might be restricted to only playing Sheryl Crow songs. :D
Wow there's only about a hundred threads on the same subject

Well aren't you charming?
Anyways, I dont bring my MP3 player along with me in fear of crashing and breaking something that expensive. About the "getting the wires caught on stuff" part, all you do is put the MP3 player wherever then pull the headphones up through your shirt/jacket/whatever then put them on that way the cord is inside you clothing and pretty darn safe.
like 2 weeks ago we were cycling thru the neighborhood with 3 of my friend.. one of them took some cheapo stereo and duct taped it to the frame :D
that was fun until he fell and broke the stereo :D
Those Oakleys are going for about $400, from what I remember when I read the announcement in the business section of the Chicago Sun-Times on Saturday. Definitely not worth it when you can get the glasses and the ipod separately for less!

Raiyn I love you man, but what's the big deal. So they started the discussion over, don't read it if you don't want to rehash it. Don't get all forum snobby... Think of how many times you've had the same discussion over and over with your friends... For example, my buddies and i have had the oral v. missionary debate at least a hundred times.
That might get censored....AWAY......
Oh and i ride with my ipod when i commute downtown...Too much ambient noise for me to hear individual cars anyway. Its not a distraction, but more a driving force. Something's gotta get me to go to work.
Here's the current "riding" playlist on my ipod -- hope it doesn't get the thread moved to the music section...

$400? But wait... these are Oakleys! So that's a pretty good deal... only $100 for an mp3 player. :D
Personally speaking, I would just as soon have them ditch the mp3 player and integrate a nice full featured FRS radio with a wireless miniature mic I could clip to the chinstrap of my helmet. That to me would be much more useful.

Music works for me on the trails, but on the roadie, I don't do music anymore.

Same here, but I think I might get one of these.
Not available til next month. Has a radio and a simple bike computer.
Too bad they don't have another level higher up, with HR monitor, more sophisticated bike computer with cadence alarms etc and an MP3 player..

Aside from the whole riding around with sound-distraction thing, are you certain that mounting something to your helmet like that is safe? Might it compromise the crash-design of the helmet? I know there's been quite a bit of debate about helmet-mounted lights too.
I used to do quite a bit of bmx riding with an anti skip cd player in my pocket before mp3 players came about......then shortly after they became affordable I would ride with an armband mounted mp3 player....
my main music choices have always been The Action Is Go by Fu Manchu or any other cd from them or any mix of any kind of punk....
I ride with moderate volume so that I could still hear cars around me, but mostly I just rode trails on my mtb and bmx street.....so its not like I was around cars often....

I perfer not to ride with headphones because i would liek to hear whats happening for exampel if theres a police car comming then i would just avoid it but going on the sidewalk and stopping for him to pass by me.

Use a Cheapo Walkman.
I clip a $30 radio walkman sideways onto my Camelback. It's been dropped and banged so many times. I'm AMAZED that it still works.
BTW, RIO has a nice line of rugged MP3/FM players out there right now. They're probably perfect for mountain biking. Make sure you get the Sony buds that wrap around the ear and hold them in place.
