Bicycle Mechanics - Does a left side click always = a left side issue?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

????????

I have an occasional click when I put more pressure on the left side during the downstroke.
It's not always there, but happens often enough

Thanks :thumb:

It's on my Italian-threaded Ciocc

You may find the following links helpful in tracking it down:

It's usually just a matter of patiently removing, cleaning,
re-lubing, and re-torquing fasteners until it quiets down.

Start with cranks, then pedals, then check the BB. If it's not those, something may be clicking when the frame flexes to that side.

Hmmm, thanks.

I swapped the pedals and cranks from another bike, and re-tightened and re-greased the left BB cup, and it's still there. For all I know it could be in the steering column, because it only happens when I'm off the saddle

AH! I've got something very similar going on on my commuting bike... only noticeable when I'm off the saddle or pushing very hard. Replaced peddles, tightened cranks, haven't opened BB yet...

Please let us know if you find the cause! :)

BB is /really/ common for clicks/creaks.

Definitely include that on your "remove, clean, re-grease, and torque to spec" list.

For me, on one of my bikes, that is the sign that my front derailler has rotated on the seat tube. It usually only clicks when I'm in the big chain ring, but if it is severe it may in the middle chain ring as well. (Yes, I've torqued the derailler clamp to specs.)

That happened to me the first week on my new bike. Internal press fit BB. Took off crank, cleaned bb without removal, greased, and now it shut up.

Otherwise, no luck so far. I've swapped the cranks a pedals from another bike, and re-greased the left (10sp) BB cup/bearing.
