Northeast - Gah, my bike has been stolen... but at least I've still got my beagle

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello fellow bike riders in Brooklyn and NY. Just a quick post and pic. My beloved Trek 6700 mountain bike was stolen from inside my house last night. It's quite an unusual paint job for a fully-specced mountain bike, with two-tone metallic blue paintwork and a cowboy and western-style pattern on paint and saddle. It has disc brakes and SPD pedals. I have the serial number and proof of purchase.
If you see or hear anything on your travels, please let me know. I am bereft without my freedom bird.

how could it be stolen from inside ur house? was anything else stolen in ur house? must be in inside job.
Wow that really sucks. I once had a bike stolen from my mother's kitchen. I guess the thief figured it was the easiest thing to take, and sell. It was a ground floor apartment and the thief bent the gate and must've slithered in through the living room window.
Try checking Craigslist. Also http://www.bikeblognyc.com/ has been posting stolen bikes. Good luck

Stacy, that is a hell of a story. Thanks for recommendations. What happened is that our very nice neighbor had a party and it seems that guests were coming in and out to smoke all night. Our neighbors said both doors had been left wide open and someone must have just walked in and taken it. The b*stard even took the helmet that was next to it! Filed a police report for all the good it will do and I've posted the serial number on both bikeregistry.com and stolenbicycleregistry.com. Lesson: write down your serial numbers immediately if you haven't already done so!! This is an uplifting news story tho...

What neighborhood are you in?
I can look in on a few places.
In my hood I see bikes hastily painted (tires and all) that i suspect of being stolen. More often than not they're stolen x-mart bikes which kinda all look alike.
so can you post a picture of your beloved?
if it gets repainted it'll still be fun to ride
In the larger picture tho.
Is an alert or feed of craigslist/ebay listings of bikes matching your description possible?
make-model-size there really won't be that many legit sales in metro ny
does that make sense
I wish you the best

yes...that was awesome to read!:thumb:
I wish you luck in getting yours back too
Every time I get up the courage to lock my bike places I read a story about one getting stolen. At least I only have to take the subway once a week (until I save up some cash for a folding bike). Of course this thread has nothing to do with leaving your bike on the street... but the results of bike theft are the same.
edit: Just read that story. I can't believe the guy has both a lawyer and a gaudy, aerospoke bedecked, fixed gear bike, and the lawyer was instrumental in getting it back.

Having a unusual bike helps in the recovery. Several weeks after I read the story I ran into him in Union Square and recognized him by his bike.

Wait....You're "nice" neighbor shares a communal entrance with you that locks? And it was left open by them or their guests during a party?
If that's the case your "nice" neighbor needs to start shopping for your replacement bike, because they are primarily responsible for the theft. If the neighbor really is that nice, he/she won't have an issue with replacing it, since it was irresponsibility on their part which caused it to get stolen in the first place. Leaving the door open created a security issue for the other tenants in the builiding, not the nicest or smartest thing to do. If they were going to do that, the decent thing to do would be to at least secure anything of value stored in the communal area.
If this is a leased property, wanna bet it's a violation of their lease to leave that door unlocked? Doors lock for a reason.
If it's an expensive bike, don't be a sucker just because someone has a great personality.

I am under the assumption that bicycles stolen by people who aren't crackheads looking for a quick sale are parted out. I mean, that would be the smart thing to do. Maybe I am giving bike thieves too much credit. I can't imagine getting my bicycle back, especially in one piece, if it were stolen in this city.
This story is funny to me in the same way that the bicycle thief getting beat up story of 2-3 weeks ago was entertaining--that one began with hipsters (er...young, affluent 20-somethings slumming it in NYC) having brunch and this one ended with hipsters calling their lawyer. How many of us have a lawyer on retainer? Maybe I am in the lawyer-less minority.

because, you know, that's never happened before. All bikes are stolen from the street. IT'S THE LAW.
