10...

3 of which are tandems which technically means my wife (who has 2 bikes) and I have joint custody.

I have:
1 complete bike, daily user for everything.
1 frame waiting on parts to build back up (rigid SS).
1 wishlist, started collecting parts last week.

The SS will debut in the spring, the wishlist in the spring of 2012.

A short time ago I had 7

-- 2 mtn bikes
-- 1 fixie
-- 1 racing bicycle
-- 1 older racing bicycle
-- 1 sport touring bicycle
-- 1 tandem

I no longer have the older racing bicycle, and I will be attempting to sell the tandem and one of the mtn bikes soon.

And then I'll need to build up the collection again here in Australia!! :D

Just cut down from 13, but that included my original college Peugeot (more than 35 years ago) and my first two junk mountain bikes, both from the early '80s. They were worth so little that I didn't bother selling or donating them when I got new ones over the years.
What I have left:
Rivendell Atlantis, my mid-life crisis bike when I turned 60. Bought the frame and built it up mainly with parts I had on hand.
Rivendell Rambouillet. Didn't need it, but I got such an incredible deal used that even my wife agreed I should buy it.
Cannondale M1000 mountain bike, present for my 50th birthday. VERY heavily used for about five years; rarely ridden now, but I live a mile from the Tahoe National Forest and I like to have an MB around.
Downtube folder (Downtube is the brand name). Bought it pretty cheap on a whim. Fits in the trunk, and it's rideable enough for 10-15 mile vacation excursions and day rides.
Old Bridgestone MB3 mountain bike converted to commute duty, with fenders and racks. Had this one for 20 years.
Mid-'80s Trek 620 touring bike, converted to singlespeed. This was my main ride for five years before I got the Atlantis.
I'm probably done buying bikes, unless I get a recumbent someday. I'm 64, and I don't have enough time left to wear out even my extra tires, let alone use up a bike.

I'm very curious about bikes 2,3 & 4. Want to share any details?

Number 2 was originally a 2006 Lemond Poprad. The frame failed this spring.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3611/3415677993_3420f61ec8.jpg
This was right about the time Trek was telling Greg Lemond to GTFO and STFU. So they replaced it with the Gary Fisher Presidio frame and carbon fork. While waiting for the replacement I bought the Yeti. When I got the Fisher I rebuilt it with a flatbar. I feel more confident interacting with traffic with a flatbar for my commute.

Number 3 is a 2006 Cannondale F4000SL. It is my mountain bike. It just happened to have slicks on it for commuting for awhile.

Number 4 is a 2001 Rocky Mountain Vertex Team Only with a BionX PL350 electric assist system. The orginal suspension fork blew up, I replaced the front fork with a rigid one. It became my regular commuting bike for a few years. Last year I was toying with the idea of getting a gas powered scooter. I was commuting less by bike since it was using valuable energy that I needed for my "real rides" in the evening. Particularly on interval days. My LBS had a BionX system set up on a bike and I gave it a try. Bought one the next day. It lets me ride at 35kph/22mphish for the same effort it takes to ride at 25kph/16mph. I can soft pedal to work for my commute and not use up as much energy for my evening rides. You should try one. It doesn't make you lazy. I pedal as usual, you just end up going faster for the same effort.

i only have one, a 1982 fuji 12 speed racer. i am not into consumption and see no need for multiple bikes.
anyway i have to stretch my dollars and use my bike as essential transportation instead of an expensive car.
my bike gets me from point a to point b and that is all a bike is suppose to be for-cheap economical transportation.

I have 3 bikes right now, 4 if you count the bmx that I have for sale.

-2009 Specialized Sirrus hybrid, my "road" bike :) To hell with drops!

-early 2000's Access XCL frame built up with almost a full 2001 Shimano LX mountain group, fun but mostly sees gravel bike path use these days.

-1980's Schwinn Woodlands "mountain bike" I repainted, cleaned all the parts up and rebuilt the bike. It wears Planet Bike Freddy fenders and a rear rack with blinky LED light. My beat around town/evening bike. <5 mile trips, the upright position does a number on my shoulders and back. Its a little TOO upright.

I use them all, though the Schwinn sees very little use. Might try to sell it sometime, without fenders and rack (wont get any more with those on it anyways). Probably just keep it since it was my first real bike restoration project :)

Someone asked me that question at a party once. While I was considering how I should answer my wife popped up with "He has 8 bicycles." That, of course, caused me to wonder which ones she didn't know about.

The question is: How do you count them?
Does it have to be fully assembled and rideable to be a bike?
How about a frameset with all of the required parts in a box. Shouldn't that count as a bike?
Suppose just one part, like the chain is missing, would that still count as a bike?

I mean it's easy if you only have one or two. The more bikes that you have, the more difficult they are to count. I'm thinking that anybody who can answer that question confidentally and accurately needs a couple more.

Really it's more like golf clubs - different bikes for different conditions. :D

I'd hate to use my good road bike for winter riding or trail running.
I wouldn't use my tourer for fast group rides
One old road bike is also my "wet ride" bike. It has fenders so that I can comfortably ride in rain or during the spring thaw when the roads are constantly wet from the snow.

2003 Cannondale F500
1996 Skykomish Marble point - turned homegrown xtracycle

Works in progress for flipping/friends/loaners:

Early 90's Nishiki Blazer
1986 Raleigh Technium 440
Mid-70's AMF 3-speed
Mid-90's Raleigh Girls Mountain bike (24" wheels)

Room mate(s) bikes:
2006 Specialized Rockhopper
Mid 90's Cannondale F700
Late 80's Bianchi (mystery model)
80's Schwinn girls Mountain bike
90's Giant girls mountain bike.

That doesn't include the few junker frames I have sitting outside, waiting for a trip to the recycler. :)

Meh. Different strokes and all that. I couldn't haul $100+ of groceries on my road bike, but the xtracycle won't get me to work in 35 minutes either. Neither of those handle bumpy trails as well as the mountain bike either.

Having two cars isn't all that terrible either, provided you can afford it. I'd have a truck to go snowboarding/camping with if I could afford it. The VW provides good gas mileage when I do drive it around town.

And why two? I ride a lot and need a spare bike when things go wrong.

I don't know how many bikes I have. Something like 30 in our basement and garage. One of my daughters owns two of them. My other daughter owns one. My wife owns one. I own five and ride them regularly. Plus my daughter and I have joint custody of another. So that's ten among the four of us. The other 20 are project bikes that I will fix up and either give away or sell. Collecting and fixing bikes is a hobby of mine, obviously.

In the old days a man that had several horses was better off then a man with one horse.
If you live in the bush then having more then one canoe and more then one pair of snowshoes will give you a better chance of putting food on the table.
A man with few sets of bows and arrows has a better chance then a man that just has one... you need to realize that things break sometimes and it's good to have a back up. That's why I have three bikes just on case one breaks down , then I grab my other one and start rolling. There is absolutly nothing wrong with having more then one bike.
