Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Moving on...

As a rule, I only live in one bike forum at a time, it eats up too much time otherwise. Planning a first tour next year, so I am moving to the touring forum. I'll check in here once in a while, but if your looking for me, you will find me over there.

It's been fun over here, but I feel that I need to learn a lot about touring, which I can accomplish more over there then I can here. My tire thread made me realise that I am not looking so much for a Clyde tire, but a touring tire. So for those of you that are on both forums, I'll see you over there. For those that are not, keep slogging on, keep riding and remember "granny" is your friend on the hills.....

haha jk, but I think these "moving on" threads people start are attention getters. Its an online community afterall. Get out there and ride :) Aren't touring guys too busy riding to post on here? haha

Sorry, but you are making the wrong choice. The Touring Forum is rife with misinformation and filled with people who think an awful lot of themselves.

Examples of misinformation and clouded reasoning:

- "churches are "public property" so you can take anything you want from them."
- "it's not a real bike tour unless you camp."
- "stealth camping is the only "real" camping."
- there's a minimum length for the daily mileage, otherwise it's not a tour.
- the Surley Long Haul Trucker is the best touring bike on the market, everyone should ride one. (Surley's stealth marketing campaign on the Touring Forum rivals that of Bikes Direct elsewhere.)
- the belief that one cannot be a 'real' tourer unless you do this, ride this, bring this..... for a bunch of anti-materialists they plug a surprising amount of merchandise.

Add in the continual left-wing slant of so many of the posters - one reason I call it The People's Republic of Touring - and the belief that a few prominent mouths constitute "the touring community" and you have good reasons to not make it a main hangout. I don't say you cannot get some useful information from the forum, but any I've picked up I could have gotten as well from here.

Oh, and incidentally, several posters in Touring dislike fat people. It's the only place on Bike Forums I've been attacked for being obese.

They are definitely opinionated and willing to say what they think, even when wrong or questionable. I think your examples are exceptions and not the rule.

Definitely the most talked about bike on the forum, but I think there is a great appreciation for all touring bikes.
How could you forget to mention the idolic worship of the Brooks Saddle?

Again, I've gotten information from Touring, but it's not quite the Nirvana that the OP is hoping for. His example of tire questions, for instance - I doubt he'll get any different answers in Touring than he would here. Well, actually he would - people will plug a small group of 'house' brands in Touring.

You are definitely right about the branding. I agree that it is a good place for very specific info, but never as helpful as Clydes with more general questions/comments. Clydes is the most accepting forum here, our bond goes beyond bicycles. We share a common struggle. Hence my comment; Touring is a destination, Clydes is a home.

We'll be here Wogs. My experience in touring is that there is a lot of good information, but don't get caught up in what other people define as touring.

When the time comes for your tour, make it your own and not into something someone else says it should be.

If you are still a Clyde or an Athena you are prohibited from leaving this forum :D. At least that what people tell me on the other forums I peruse :innocent:. So see ya next week right?
