yeah I guess so...
I also just learned this tonight... which makes it even more interesting...
fenders racks bottle cages etc etc... it can do it all...
find that one set of bars...
I envision it as a long distance roadie (no weight weenie here) with a quick change of wheels and bomb-proof urban assault bike...
light trail... (heck you could probably singletrack it all day long...)
hmmm $2,000 for forks and frame though...

It's 650b not a 29er. Very cool though, I've been wanting one since he first posted his prototype. Can't seem to scrape up enough spare change.

48cm (for 650B wheels). For PBH of about 77 to 83cm; Saddle height 67 to 73.
52cm (for 650B wheels) For PBH of about 81 to 87cm; Saddle height 71 to 77.
56cm (for 650B wheels) For PBH of about 84 to 91cm; Saddle height 74 to 81.
60cm (for 700c wheels) For PBH of about 87 to 95cm; Saddle height 77 to 86..
64cm (for 700c wheels) For PBH of about 93 to 102cm; Saddle height 85 to 92.
the option for me IS 700c/29"...

Seems like a bit of over kill to me (unless you are riding through Mongolia) but if you've looked at what your needs are and this bike meets them, go for it. If it's your dream bike, the cost shouldn't matter. Unless you are made of money you better make sure it's your dream bike though! Rivendell makes great stuff so that isn't an issue.
What's with all the Tolkien references? Bombadil, Rivendell, Quickbeam, Legolas... do they pay royalties to the Tolkien estate?

Is there a huge amount of difference between a 650B wheel and a 26" wheel? Seems to me that the 26" size is much more common and therefore might be easier to find tires and inner tubes for?

tell ya Rhodabike I don't know...
I think a 650B is actually an older size... Rivendell seems pretty keen on them... can't say I've seen em elsewhere... there are far more knowlegable peeps around than me!!!
my size has 700c so..... :D I know what I am getting into...

Thought about it briefly, but I already have an Atlantis and Rambouillet (got a great deal on the Rambo used; I couldn't really afford both). If I were going to ride to Tierra del Fuego, I'd probably want the Bombadil, but everything I do now I can do on the Atlantis.

I saw some link to this bike which takes you to a tour blog of some sort, the long and short being that somebody rode the entire Great Divide, Canada to Mexico on one--unsupported. Pretty cool alrounder! I want one, it looks like something from a Mad Max movie with the clear powdercoat!
I'd love to have one.
The frame + fork is 2 complete Long Haul Truckers.
The buildout for one of those would be another $1500 (wheels, drivetrain, bars, etc). I mean, you could do it cheaper, but who puts Sora components on a $2k frame.
I can get a LHT and a 29er MTB for less than the frame cost of a Riv. And I'd have a backup bike if something broke.
So, sure, if someone drops several thousand dollars in my lap I'll be all over it.

650B is an older french size but it's becoming more popular. Apparantly 700c wheels work on the larger size as well, here is a link to one of the blogs I've seen on this bike:
