Hi everyone,
I just signed up to BikeForums.net yesterday. My wife and I bought hybrids earlier this summer for some pleasure riding. I bought a Jamis Citizen 1.0 and she bought a Fuji Commuter 2.0. We've gone on several 5-10 mile rides around our neighbourhood this summer. Last week I became frustrated with bussing to and from work. My bus commute to work would take between 35-55 minutes, depending on how successful I was at making one of my connections. One of the two busses I take to work only runs every half hour, so either have to take the first bus 15 minutes earlier than is absolutely necessary in order to be sure to make my connection or I risk having to wait a half hour for the next bus. So I decided to try and ride my bike into work. It's about 6.0 miles, and involves a net 200 foot climb- although because it involves crossing a bit of a valley, I end up having to climb most of that both directions. Last Wednesday was my first attempt at commuting, and it took me about 35 minutes my first morning- so no faster than the fastest I could make it on the bus, but I wasn't beholden to the vagaries of the bus schedule, which was nice. No longer would I feel rushed in the morning or the evening to try and run to make a bus. This morning I made the ride in about 29 minutes. Part of that was because I was able to come up with a slightly better route that lets me avoid more major intersections, but I also think I managed to ride in a bit faster.
So far, I'm really enjoying it. I get in to work and I don't feel stressed- I've got a nice big endorphin rush.
Anyways, thanks for welcoming me to your forum! Now I'm going to go to the commuter forum and look for some advice!
Thanks!
Brad
