2006 specialized hard rock.

Keep braking links, I think its because of the crankset needing to be replaced.

Rides rough.

Possible scenarios?

The crankset has seen a nasty michigan winter c'mute. And is very old/many miles.

do you keep breaking the same chain that you're repairing or are you constantly breaking chains that you're replacing?

Measure wear on chain.
Don't shift under load.
Don't shift more than one gear at a time.
Do NOT re-use Shimano pins

The only breakages I've seen or experienced had been insufficiently lubed.

This topic comes up frequently on this forum. Every time it's because someone is trying to reuse a pin pushed out of a riveted-pin chain. DO NOT REUSE PINS ON NEW STYLE CHAINS! Either use the specially designed Shimano replacement pin (and only use that once) or use a quick link.

Buy SRAM chains. Reusable PowerLink. No giving money to shimano every time you want to take the chain off, and better yet, no tools required once you have the chain installed and correct length. Or, buy whatever brand chain you like, and buy a SRAM powerlink to go with it, and an extra to keep around.

Just MY advice.

You probably need new chain rings and maybe a new cassette as well.
Get your new chain (SRAM are my personal choice) with your new bits. Put them all on at same time.

yup, anytime you replace cassette or chain rings, new chain.
