Why is it... that of the 4 bike shops I regularly go to, only one of them has a BIKE RACK?

That just seems ironic to me. :) One other has a ramp up to the door that you can lock your bike to the hand rail, but daaamn... it's a bike shop. One other will just let you bring the bike in (but there isn't that much room - maybe for one bike.

Anyone else notice this in your area?

i notice the lack of bike racks here in new york all the time. most people use a street sign or parking meter. although, some of the shops have an airhose outside where you can get a free shot of air. that's pretty nice to have.

My FBS likes people to bring their bikes in so the racks are inside near the cash register!!! The used bikes for sale, they keep out front on the sidewalk!!!

When I first started going to bike shops, I'd lock up the bike out front and go in and they'll be like, "where's your bike." I say, "outside." And they would usually say, "no way, bring it in."
I guess it's just a way to a) encourage you to bring your bike inside (it IS a bike shop after all) where it's safer and b) so they can check out what you have.

We've got bike racks coming out the ears here in Chicago. For that I am glad. I still end up using street signs, etc, most of the time, though, as I tend to end up places that don't have racks when I need to lock up. Go figure.

One of my local LBS's put a sigh on their door that said in effect: "Leave your bike outside if it's not being serviced." It's been up about a week. I don't know what prompted it. Hmmmm.

could be either people were bringing in dirty bikes or maybe they were leaning it up against merchaindise and ruining it. at my lbs most people lean their bikes against the back counter, the tires, or in the back entrance(but this takes some serious skill because its on an incline:D)

I normally bring my bike inside. However, I'm probably a VIP customer there now.

One of our LBSes has a rack that anyone could pick up, bike and all, and throw into the bed of a pickup. When he opened a new location, he re-barred the rack to the ground -- backwards (easier to "pull into" it, but useless with a U-lock). So he put in a second one, but put it so close to the wall that you can't get a wheel over the hoop.

"Hmmmmmm" is right!
