I'm researching this as well - my current tyres are great on gravel but terrifyingly lacking in grip for braking on the road. (They're weird turquoise coloured cross specific Michelins that came with my bike.)
Do you need tyres that are good on the road as well? If so, I've been told that Marathon XRs (an adventure touring tyre) work well and the new Marathon Extremes (ditto but lighter and lower rolling resistance) should be even better. Or a lot of people seem happy riding gravel on +38mm slicks.
Anyway - if people suggesting gravel tyres for the OP could say how they handle on road as well I'd be grateful!

WTB Allterrainasaurus. Roll well, handle okay on gravel, pavement and dirt. Slick mud they have acceptable lateral adhesion but lack the bite to drive forward well, although less air would probably help with that. Good braking adhesion wet and dry on pavement.
Came stock on my Bianchi San Jose, my commute is 5 miles of gravel and 3 of pavement, plus i have ridden up to 60 mile days on them, some single track, and a couple of cross races- racing is where i noted the lack of traction in slick mud.
fairly inexpesive as well. good ride quality at <70 psi. (I weigh about 175#).

I'd recommend Specialized Burrough Armadillo. Road, path, and/or gravel road. Should not puncture and with great perfomance.

how much gravel - 1 layer over dirt / clay? 2 inches of 1/4 inch stones (i.e., the worst riding surface in the world)?
edit - I'm riding 30mm Michelin Mud2s over gravel and dirt. Feels pretty solid. Haven't tried it on deeper stuff though.

The ritchey speedmax is a good, reasonably priced tire.
