I've been giving my M400 a little TLC (read, spending money on new parts), and I noticed that the left side crank doesn't seat fully onto the axel. I upgraded the cranks when I first bought the bike in '99, and I guess I forgot about this little issue. Is this a Shimano bottom-end bottom bracket that doesn't fit a Shimano LX crank? Would buying a newer LX bottom bracket solve my problem?

As long as the crank isn't loose or slipping and the bolts are tight, then it is fully seated on the taper (or spline).

Just looks strange to me to have all that space between the end of the BB and crank arm. The drive side has much less space.

Friendly reminder here to those who post pics/images:

If you're able to resize them, most folks here will appreciate it. Helps to avoid having to scroll horizontally.

600px wide × 400px high is a good viewing size.

File size of 300kb or less is nice, too.

Just sayin'.

This is perfectly normal for this style of crank/bottom bracket.

Thanks, glad to know it's normal. I guess the original junky cranks had a slightly more concave end to the crank where it joined the bottom bracket area. So this one looks far off.
