Touring - Hello from south LONDON

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone!
Just joined the forum first time. I am waiting for a custom Roberts tourer to be made so i can start touring. Living in central London is driving me mad and I need to get out. Most of my friends prefere to get sloshed on a weekend wish is ok sometimes, but i look forward to meeting cyclists for holiday swaps and tours in the near future. looking forward to hearing from all of you!

Howdy Juliet, hope your ticket to the road arrives soon. Happy touring and welcome to the forum. :)
I'm about to be cycling to Maine shortly. I figure 7 days to get there from NJ at a leisurely pace, then visiting a friend before continuing to New Brunswick, CA.
Have to post pictures of the new bike, it's a bikeforums requirement ;)

Juliet,
welcome.
I understand that London charges a toll to drive a motor vehicle into the city. Very Kyoto.

You are very lucky to have Sustrans to help you get around the UK

As you surf Bike Forums you will notice that many users see biking as an adjuct to car (and especially SUV) ownership. You are truly blessed to live in a continent that sees the bicycle as sustainable transportation.
If I were to leav you with one thought it would be:
Strive for justice and peace among people, and respect the dignity of every human being.

Hi Juliet,
I often feel the same way you do. The Gold Coast isn't quite as big as London, but Australian planners just seem to love urban sprawl! And everyone over here seems to spend a lot of time drunk, too.
Any particular touring destinations you have in mind?

London can be a great place to ride a bike, esp in the central zone.
I'm not sure I would use a Roberts for riding around London, far too swish.
There are some good day rides within a short train ride. The North and South Downes, Southern Kent, East Angia. Most Londoners dont realize how accessable the countryside is.

Hey Julie. I'm a south Londoner too! I'm from Orpington, right on the outskirts. If you're into mountainbiking I'd check out the Greensand way especially near Toys Hill and Ide Hill. Or there's the Surrey Hills and in particular Leith Hill, which I hear is excellent.
There are plenty of nice bits and pieces of singletrack dotted around the North Downs, my favourite piece is hidden behind a golf-course near Croydon. It just takes time and exploration to find these places.
Hi'ya,
I'm in the Home Counties (near to Luton). Not done much cycling in the UK, apart from trying to get to Manchester .... gave up after 3 days in Derbyshire, the hills ! Only took a day & a half on the wayback, after binning most of my luggage :-)
If you want to chat about two wheels feel free to mail me.

This year I have been to the US, done the Alps from France to Italy and am off to Provence end of september! Make sure you don't get as carried away as I did :)
