A friend of mine just sold me his Trek 1400 with Spinergy carbon fiber wheels for $500. I looked around, and that seemed like a decent price. I'm really excited about getting into biking.

The bike shimmies a bit when I get up to speed. Could one of the wheels be bent?

check if the wheels are out of true, wheels get out of true when the spokes are not tension accordingly...

lift up the bike, spin the front/rear wheel and check for caliper clearance as a sign of out-of-true

Another thing to check is if there is play is the hubs or headset.
