Lemond Poprad or Specialized Roubaix?????


Guys, I am just getting back into cycling. I want to ride about 1-1.5 k per year, not race. I'll do a couple of charity rides. I tried both bikes in a parking lot, and can't decide. i will get around to trying to borrow or rent these bikes for a longer ride, but so far it is a wash. i would appreciate any information or opinions, realizing these are subjective.

i'm not young, and my bak hurts, specially when i try and go too aero. any other ideas or bikes??

I'll have to vote for the 04 Poprad. My girlfriend got one for $850 new, she got a good deal but even so at 10 or 1100 for a nicely made frame of 831 steel and full 105 I don't think you can beat it. She had her's converted to triple for touring and will simply run a single ring for CX. It has rear braze ons for racks. Over all it's rock solid. She definatly needed to swap the saddle out and you will too esp w/ a bum back. The thing was like a rock. Anyway Thats my opinion...

I got a Surly Cross Check for similar reasons (no racing). I had the handle bar stem cut so that the bars are about the same height as the seat. I also added a Brooks B17 saddle (it takes about 200 miles to break in the saddle)>

My vote is for the Poprad. (but, of course I own one). We sound a lot alike (not young with a bad back) I love the poprad for a few reasons. It allows me to go anywhere. With the 32c tire I can handle all roads including gravel. My last bike was a hybrid but I missed the aerodynamic ride of the road bike and hence made the transition to the cyclocross. It will also make a great commuter or tour bike. I have put on 1100k since I got it in June and have not a single complaint (not even the saddle). Will be riding in my first MS bike tour this weekend.

Thank you all for the help. I had meant to say specialized sequoia, not roubaix, but will ride both bikes a lot before trying to decide. I am not sure the bike shop will switch out the double for a triple, but would like that. The shop is asking around 1100 i think for a 2004.

You would definatlly have to pay more for the triple conversion. My GF got it done for only $40 more. It was easy for the shop to do it since the bike was not built up yet. Like I said really plan on getting a saddle, you may be lucky and the one on it will fit. $1100 sounds good I thing suggested retail is $1200 and that is what my LBS (not the one my GF got it from) sells them for...
