Professional Cycling For the Fans - Interesting Thought: It would be easy to sabotage a cyclist - kind of scary.

I started thinking the other day about how some of the people here despise Lance. Then I started thinking, well...if they were determined enough they could probably sabotage him.

How?

Well, if they were able to access the tour bus, Lance's car, Lance's hotel room, etc. they could possibly plant illegal substances...needles...etc. to make it look like he was cheating. Most likely it would have to be an inside job.

So you think that's impossible right? About as impossible as the guy who stole Lance's famous livestrong bike during the TDF perhaps?

All I can say is, I hope these cycling teams have really good in house security.

Or you could just run up to him during a stage and punch him in the stomach like happened to Merckx

Better yet, I hope any lowlife who considers such a thing falls off a cliff on his way to doing it.

If I were a successful pro cyclist (or any athlete actually) I would be positively paranoid about someone putting something in my drinks/food that could show up on doping tests...

I dont remember hearing about a bike being stolen during TDF..? are you referring to the Tour of California?

Anyways...I have always thought about how easy it is for a fan to throw a waterbottle or push someone off the bike as they are climbing a stage.

Or a rival team. I remember one thread where Lance was blasted by some because he intercepted a water bottle going to AC that came through riders on another team. Good move from a team standpoint, odds are low, but it could have been tainted (or if I want to be overly cycical it might have contained just a little of a substance that everyone uses but below allowable levels, just a little more, just enough for a positive test).

Second, water bottles get pitched on the side of the road. Leaving evidence out in public would not be a very good idea.

I find slipping drugs into bottles, malicious or otherwise, really doubtful.


For the OP, I think pretty lowly of Armstrong, but plotting sabotage is on a whole other level. Cheating a cheat is still cheating, and now you are down in the muck with him.

i thought of that when i see people handing water bottles to people coming up the climbs. thats scary. also say someone on your staff is pissed at you. drop some liquid Andro into the gatorade and your done. I remember reading that when the cyclist get sick they cant even take cold medicine or stuff to combat the symptoms because it shows up as doping on their tests. not like any other sport. almost all other sports have Oxegyn bottles there for the athletes to use when they get winded. cycling is pretty raw.
