Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - No offense but some fixed gear riders are jerks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just try to say what's up or complement their bike and they just look at me like I'm a piece of crap or just don't even say anything back. It seems like some riders think they are better than other people or they just talk to a certain group of people (jerks like them?).

Maybe they weren't expecting you to greet them so they were flabbergasted.

Maybe some guys think its gey when other guys compliment their ****.

I mean, do you go up to guys and say Hey Nice Jeans Buddy!

That's not even close to the same thing.

What's wrong with some human decency? It doesn't mean he's trying to hit on them.

I have conversations with other bike guys I see out there almost daily (I ride daily), and its never awkward. However, growing up in Ann Arbor, MI, there are DEFINITELY a group of bike jerks who think they are better than any body else, and their bike is the most uber-leetest bike in the world.

Hey dont get me wrong, just sayin.
I compliment other guys bikes (usually when were parked and not movin).
And I brought me new build at an LBS shoppin for a tail light, and one of the mechs whos worked on my other bikes and never commented said Nice Bike. I was like, Hey Thaaaanks!

it's not exclusive to fixed gear riders

matter of fact, the only cyclist likely to thank you for the compliment on his bike is a recumbent rider

"No offense but some fixed gear riders are jerks"

That can and does apply to any group of people.

Riding home last night from a twelve-hour work day, I encountered another fixed-gear guy approaching on the opposite side of the road about a half-mile from my house. He yelled "Hey man, nice Kilo!" as we passed. By the time I yelled "Thanks!" I had forgetten how exhausted I was and rode the rest of the way home with a smile on my face.

Nah, I ride all type of bikes and when I get a compliment I always reply with a "Thank you!" :thumb: Hell, someones taking the time to look at, appreciate, and then compliment the bike your riding and your going to an ass and not even acknowledge them?! Not I.

welcome to the real world.

grow a better moustache, and/or wear tighter jeans, and/or get more nitto.

or, ride ride ride, get strong and kick their ass.

either way, cred. you decide which is more credible.

Well, lets be real, most people are ass-holes. I feel like road-bikers look at me riding my fixed gear like I'm some sort of rodant. I still say what's up.

There are a lot of cool FG peeps in San Jose, but there also a lot of jerks here to. Where did this happen? Was it any of the SJFixed people?

i don't talk to other cyclists on the road anymore. Only time I talk bikes to ppl IRL is if they are a friend or something. The only time I say something to other cyclists is if I see one in need of help. I do give nods and waves, though.

ironically just today i was riding into the parking lot of my apartment complex and saw a neighbor riding out. i always give him the ol' "hey, whats up man?" he always gives me the mopey silent stare. its a ****ing jerky thing to do. don't get me wrong, i'm not expecting some parade and fanfare-- i just think its ****ty to completely blow off somebody you see on a regular basis. i mean a "hey" would do.

Don't sweat it man, just say hi and take his silence for what it is, if some day he ask you to stop with your greetings, just say, cool, no problem, have a good one, and it's over. :thumb: you loose nothing. ;)

He is in his own world, and you startled him out of it. He probably thinks you're Gay. Most men don't talk to each other unless they are good friends. In the Men's room you don't talk, that is just how it is...Women are usually the ones who engage in small talk, if I was you, I would just blow it off and ignore the guy, he's really not your friend..

People who think they are too cool to smile, or say 'what's up' are most likely ****s or just very lonely. Don't sweat it, there are enough good people out there.

I always get a good laugh when I pass the cooler than you fixed riders that can't be bothered to say hello or acknowledge a greeting in any way. They always have the same blank, hungover look on their face. Like they are exhausted from putting their outfit together or something. It's a miracle they have any energy to ride at all.

Same goes for roadies except they are just too intense and focused to look at you. usually about half way through my ride I start wondering if anyone besides myself is having any fun at all. :)

People are jerks...

Try talking motorcycles/shooting the ess with your average Harley rider, especially if you own something else. :)

Brig
09-17-09, 09:37 AM
I agree with most here. I try to nod/wave at everybody riding. I also ride motorcycles, and I give the "keep 'er between the lines" wave to all riders regardless of the bike. I say just keep it up, eventually the D-bags will get tired of it and wave/nod/'sup back.

Oh, sorry King...but I'm just sayin'......

I was riding home from work the other day and some dude yelled, "Hey sweet orange bike man!" from his porch. I yelled back, "thanks man" as I was going by at a nice pace. I'm just nice like that.

At school I see a could tarck bikes being walked around/locked up and my thought is always "Dear God, I am not a religious man, but please make this guy not want to talk to me. Amen."

So far it has worked. Although I am waiting to run into the guy with the stickered up/tarcked out Vigorell.

Dude, at my school there is some kid w/ a Cannondale Track. Not only is it a C'dale track, but it has Record crank, Campy Atlanta rear wheel, Zipp front wheel, and risers (of course). Apparently, this person thinks that a single cable lock through the front wheel is enough to secure his bike. Also, I have never seen him RIDE it, only walk it around. Sorry, just had to put that out there b/c it's one of the nicest bikes I've ever seen IRL and I know it's gonna get stolen b/c kid is an idiot.

Like that carbon Kestrel I saw with full Dura Ace locked up with a single Wal-Market cable lock. I actually left a note telling him to stop that and not encourage theft.
