I have a Schwinn tandem, I was thinking about converting it to a recumbent bike. Any idea how, what's been done, what's available? I have shop access, and a bike-enthusiast machinist to help.

first , what are your overall ideas for the bike: Above seat steering-ass or underseat steering uss?
second. What type of seating: mesh seating or a hard seating? Power on cycling has the mesh seating. andrew carson at diy recumbent has plans for the seat frame.
Third the power train/chain drive: I presume it will be a crank behind the head tube.
Will you incorporate the two crankset to speed up the building(i.e midcranks)?
The top post from the headtube to the back triangle is where your designing/fitting it out
come into play.
Remember---Measure twice.....cut once.

1. Remove second-seat crankset.
2. Use first seat post for steering column.
3. Mount sling-back chair just ahead of second-seat post.
4. guy-wire front handlebars to rear handlebars.
5. Transfer brake and shift cabling to second-position handlebars.:recum:
My main need is for a seat/plans and an articulated handlebar bracket, the rest can be jimmy-rigged pretty easily.

In your post of the list, #4 will require instead of guy wires push rod with tie rod ends...this has been proven to to be more secure. Look up remote steering lwb recumbent. this will give you an idea as to
what to do.
