Is it alright to drink gatorade and the like even when you're not being overly active? Will it have any adverse effects on your hydration level or anything? I'm just curious - I'm a former soda addict, and I like having flavored drinks - water gets boring after awhile.

Sure if you don't mind the sugar, carbohydrates and sodium. Stick to the water.

It's better than soda but not as good as water. Then again I too like the light flavoring of sports drinks compared to soda.

I think they might be crap for your teeth. Even worse than sodas.
Something to do with the 'acidididity' in them

Really? Considering that carbonic acid in soda is a lot stronger than a sports drink, you'd think the opposite is true.

Simple answer. Buy 2-3 different juices. I'm talking 100% juice here, no added sugar or water. Then mix them 1 part water to 1 part juice, or something like that to taste. If you buy a few different types of juice, then you won't be bored.

I rarely drink 'soda', I don't see the facination. It has no nutritional value whatsoever, and has more sugar than you think would be possible it fit in such a small can. Why bother?

Toss that sh!t in the trash along with you fries and lard burger. Time to start developing the palate of a grown up.

Well, I'm not going to beat you up over this question! There are low sugar sports drinks available and they're fine in moderation. If you like flavored drinks, try a flavored water that's sugar free (I like Propel during a ride, don't know if it's sugar free) but there are flavored water's that have a little fiz to them!

Thanks guys. I didn't want to replace my former lust for soda with something equally bad (in large frequent quantities). I might try the 100% juice + water idea.

PS - I only ask because I have probably 100 empty sports drink bottles left over here by friends and whatnot, and I don't think anyone I know has ever come to my apartment to work out.

Randy - I typically stick with water after swearing off pop (even diet) almost 2 years ago. I was up to at least 6 cans of Mountain Dew a day...seemed like I couldn't get enough of it...but after the initial change-over I never re-aquired the taste for it and check myself occasionally w/ a sip of pepsi or other regular pop and can't even stand it anymore.

If it's not water (and I can totally understand the need for a variety and flavor) I go with Fruit2o, or Slim-lite (found at Sam's Club) which both are non sugar / carb drinks. My wife keeps diet rite in the fridge and says that is good enough for her when she wants a "cola" taste...again no carbs, aspartame, etc.

Propel is good..a bit pricey IMO, Gatorade and other sports drinks in moderation...

Agreed, the soda problem has a good bit of visibility. I think the sports drinks perhaps fall of the radar as they well, are 'sports = health' But go to a gas station convience store and it seems there's more sport drinks than soda, bought by folks looking to refresh from sitting in their car.

Bottom line on any drink is to read the label and watch the serving size (I think its easier to gulp down lots sports drink, working out or not, than carbonated soda)

I dunno...something tells me supersized fast food and more video game exercise vs. getting outside is contributing to it too... ;)

Did you hear that Krispy Kreme is coming out with a drink/shake that tastes like their donuts...saw it on the news last week....and we wonder why we are the fatest generation!
