I picked up my sons Nishiki TT funny bike last Saturday. He was very anxcious to ride but its been so rainy we havent had a chance.
This afternoon it was cleared up so we went for a ride. I paced him out (apx18-20 mph) for apx 5 miles and asked if he wanted to continue or turn around.. He said continue.....
so I figured I would sit on his rear wheel and see what he could do, thinking he would want to turn around within the next mile or so.
Well he picked up the pace and kept going all the way to the turn at the trail 10 miles, we stopped and got a drink of water and began our ride back, I again was in front and before I knew it he passed me with apx 5 miles to go.
I looked at his cadence, he was hardly even pedaling, I sprinted up next to him and took a look at his gearing, when he saw me pull up next to him he shifted and pulled away, the stinker left me behind. I kept him in my veiw, but while I was pedaling all I could think of was Jan Ulrich and how he doesnt seem to be in form this year, everytime I drew closer he just pulled away.
well at the end of the trail (20 miles) I see my son pull in and park next to the truck, I look at my watch and sprint it in, he beat me by 1 min and 30 secs... grrrrrrrrrrr ...... and to top it off a group of riders was there watching him come in, smiling at him and then a minute and 30 sec later here I come...
When I put his bike in the truck I again looked at his gearing, his rear disc has a 13/19 freewheel and a giant chainring, where my tt has a 12/25... I am going to have to fine some new gears or give up my tt bike :(

Well, if he's 11 years old, I'd be worried. :)

Sounds like you did a good job with that one "Dad". I love seeing my kids "win".

I did this to my dad once when he was into jogging. We entered a 2 mile race in Wichita, KS in the early to mid 80's. Lots of folks around the start line, so we decided that if we got split up that we would meet a particular tree.

We start and about 1 mile in, I feel great, and tell my dad that I'm going to push forward. He said, "Okay," and off I went. Don't know what it was that day, but I had energy and speed to burn. I was flying past people. Felt like I could run to the next time zone before sundown. I was about 11-12 then. I'm 31 now; a 2 mile jog would end me so I stick to bikes.

Something about kids that age and the energy/power/speed they can summon can really surprise you.

Be happy. He could have been into Ballet.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Get his autograph now. It'll be worth money after his first win in the Giro or the Tour.

LOL... he is 11 years old... and I have his autograph already, I will be sure to have him sign a bunch of blank checks when he gets his first checking acct.
We rode again today me on my roadie and him on his TT, I was riding between 18 and 20 mph and he stuck on my rear wheel like glue. We only rode about 15 miles today. let me tell you the kid loves his TT bike.

Any pics of the boys' Nishiki TT Bike? Curious to see the setup used for an 11 year old. Thanks for the story too.

Seriously, I would contact the USA Cycling Association and see about where you can find someone to help guide/train your son. He sounds like he has potential!

I clocked my nephew at 11 miles per hour on his small bicycle.... at 5 years old! He was riding with me, and I had my bike computer on, and when I saw this, I made it a mission to keep him interested in cycling. He's now 7 and he sits with me and watches the bike races with me, and I encourage my brother to continue buying bikes for him. He's currently staying with me on weekends over the summer, and we are working on how he can dismount properly at sudden stops, as well as how to fall properly. He is pretty big for his age (just over 4 feet tall and skinny as hell), so he may be perfect for cycling, and if he gets to be a professional, I'll be rolling in the big bucks with him too! :D Well, just kidding, but I really do hope he continues being serious with cycling. I really think when he turns 12 we'll be able to ride together quite a bit, and from there, if he's still excited, I'll buy him his first serious bike myself. Now my other nephew, his brother.... *sigh* we hope he someday gets interested in something (he just turned 5, so we'll see).

Seriously, especially now that he has that bike, he could use some direction. If he's thinking about turning professional, this is about the age recommended by the USA Cycling to start to specialize with the cycling as his primary sport.
