I noticed today that there's some chain slippage when the gear is on the 5th (7 gears) sprocket. It happens every so often when I am hard on the pedal. It's a lousy feeling when I am climbing a hill too to have the pedal skip. It is also a sprocket that I use quite often in combination with my 2 largest chainrings.
Any help will be appreciated.

If your description is accurate worn chain + cog is the likeliest answer. Measure your chain and find out.

Probably a worn cassette. If you use that sprocket often, it makes sense it would wear out before the others.

so can i just chain the cog or do I change the entire cassette? Dang.... The bike's only 3 yrs old and I've just started commuting with it this summer! :cry:

*Only* 3 yrs old? You do realize that's quite a long time in the bike maintenance world right? 7 gears... either it's a freewheel or it's a 7 speed casssette. Unless it's a particular high end one it'll most likely be cheaper to replace the entire unit - if that 5th cog is even available seperately. Can you please tell us what 7 speed cogset you have?
