View Full Version : Knog Frog Vs theft?

Ive just bought a front and rear knog frog, since they are just effectively strapped to your bike, is it generally safe to leave them on for 15 - 20 minutes max while locked up, has anyone ever had one stolen? Or perhaps its worth the 45 seconds each way to take them off and replace them at every stop?

get a real light. those things are worthless for anything other than making it legal to ride at night.

+1 most people I see get the one LED lights and they remain to be ninja cyclists. The 5 LED lights are really bright though.

+1 on just waiting until you need them to even attach them.

and +1 on getting a light that will actually make you visible at night.

They get stolen a lot in LA, even on group rides. Too bad.

You could secure them from underneath with a small ziptie. Most people looking to steal those expect them to pop right off.

yeah i used to attach mine w/ zipties

but then i got real lights

get a real light. Those things are crap. I leave my Flea strapped on my bars whenever I go in places, and that's' worth way more than a Knog. Maybe someone will steal it and that would suck, but I have enough other things to worry about besides my friggin bike light's security.

pbsf and blaze will actually allow you to see and be seen.

otherwise get 3w led flashlights and o ring them to your bike. and as with anything, if it can be stolen it's worth taking with you if possible. if you don't have a bag with you knogs make really nice earrings.

I leave mine on all the time, i haven't had anything stolen yet. Everyone in my area leaves them on all the time too.

I had a knog frog on my bike for 4 months and it never got touched until my whole bike was stolen. Suprisingly 6 weeks later when I found the bike all that was missing was the seat, seatpost, and light.

So what if they don't help you see. I ride so much at night and maybe once a week having a light would be helpful. Cause about 600 years ago somebody came up with the idea of a street light, which lights more or less all the roads in more or less all towns. All I want is to not get pulled over.

And to be honest, I don't want cars to see me except from behind so they don't hit my back. Anytime I approach an intersection or a driveway or anywhere that a car wants to go, there is always this awkward confusion about who is going to go. if the car has the right of way and just goes like normal then no problem, but they always stop extra long, sometimes wait for you and then wave you on when they easily could have gone first and you wouldn't have even needed to slow down. Sometimes, they punch the accelerator cause they ain't waiting for no bike. If cars can't see me then i only have to predict what a car normally does when it doesn't see anyone. But if they do see me, and now I try to predict what this person thinks about bikes, will they stop and let me go, try to go first, who knows.

My knog is always on my helmet, so it's always with me.

never had them stolen when I forgot to take them off when parked....but I've had them fall off if not installed properly

It's not a lamp to see the road....but other people can see you coming. especially when in flash mode. My town has street lights so no need for huge off road lights.

If you can't figure out how to install a Knog, then you probably shouldn't be doing much wrenching...

In a fight between a Knog Frog and theft, I am pretty sure theft would come out on top.

The Knog Frog's defense is pregnable, so you might want to look out for that.

Yup, there are now stronger cysts than the one LED version. I just bought one and it's good enough to be seen.

I use a blinkie 3, but when i bought a rear knog it was totally out of impulse because of how cool it is.

ive got a cheap 5 setting 5 led bell rear light that was like 10 bucks at walmart, that's very bright and flashes quickly or not making you very visible. i've had it on my bike for over a year and it hasnt been stolen.

knogs suck

knogs suck like walmart is the best thing that's ever happened to culture.

that is to say, they don't suck. they just aren't effective.

dcdude

but in their prescribed duty as a light, they don't perform well. thus they suck.

I have always held this same view of thinking up until tonite.
I was trying to make the light before it turned red and was going pretty fast. Just as I was about to cross the intersection a dude and his girl on bikes came out of nowhere (running the red light). Luckily I had time to slam on the breaks but a few seconds difference and it could have been ugly.
A front light could have possibly been helpful in this situation.

And to answer OP's question I have had 3 knogs stolen which is why I didn't have a light tonite. The small ones suck but the 3 rear LED isn't bad

still saying you shop at walmart is not my definition of a defensible argument against them.

i just got home with a set of knogs and one of these

depends where you are. I have the skinks, they are bright!

It is pretty safe to leave them on all the time. When I go to the supermarket I leave my helmet hanging over the bars with no problems. (although who wants a steal a stinky sweaty helmet, even if it did cost ¥20,000 or $200 in Yankie monopoly mulah)

If it takes you 45 seconds to take off a knog and throw it in your bag, you're doing it wrong.

This operation should take less than 10 seconds total.

While it is preferable and safest to always ride as though the cars don't see you, there are instances where you need to rely on being seen or you will get hit by a car no matter how smart you are. Going through an intersection at speed and not having someone in the oncoming lane turn left and kill you immediately springs to mind.

But many if not most of the things from Walmart, were made in China. Conundrum!
More importantly, What flavor lights are those?

cc700
10-05-09, 01:40 AM
tactical flashlights, the red one is a k2 luxeon and the white is an ssc p7 like the magicshine lights. it's probably about 600 lumens, like a car headlight...

and i have two sets. one p7 has a 30hz strobe which is meant to stop attackers. it's uhh... dangerously noticeable.

i can't really communicate how bright these things are. you just have to see them. /hijack

thought this thread has died, ive gotten it down to under 15 seconds to take them off and get them in my bag now, so its probably best to do that instead of risk leaving them on outside right?

I'm imagining a coach with a stop watch, yelling at you to do this over and over again. YOU CAN SHAVE OFF MORE TIME.

I'd try searching for a knog specific Ulock.

I've had my frog stolen off my bike. I usually just remove em everytime I lock up, and the one time I don't.....poof gone. Guess that gives me an excuse to get a better light now.

Drag harder on your cigarette and you'll get more light than those things.

And, why would you leave something on your bike that could be stolen so easily? I parked next to a bike the other day and could have helped myself to their front and rear lights, computer, water bottle and helmet. What planet do these people live on, that in this day and age, they think they can leave stuff laying around like that?
