i just got an origin8 crank set to put on a Puch frame to convert it to a SS/FG (i know Origins arent the best, but it was cheap and this is just a cruise around bike).

anyways, i took off the old crank and started putting on the origin8 only to realize the arms FIT, but not all the way - or maybe it IS all the way and it just seems odd to me? im not sure and want to get to the bottom of it. should i just file down the arm holes? or actually buy a new bottom bracket?

i want to ride this before it gets too cold!!!

I believe you're trying to fit a ISO crank on a JIS bottom bracket. I've had luck, also has Sheldon Brown, tightening it on very hard, but your chainline will be off if you already did the calculations.

I had this same problem putting an Origin8 crank on the bottom bracket from my old Gitane. After extracting much info from the C&V forum, I ended up just getting a new bottom bracket, and it worked fine. In my case, the old spindle was some older standard and so the fit wasn't even close.

I don't think the Origin8 takes an ISO bottom bracket as kringle suggests. This part always confuses me, but I believe it's JIS. A 103mm bottom bracket will give you a 42mm chainline.

Wierd, usually ISO cranks on a JIS BB has it fit short. Conversely, JIS crank to ISO BB fits too deep.

You're right, Origin8s are J.I.S.

Just happened across this thread and all though my question is slightly off topic I feel it is relevant.

Will you cite your source regarding this statement? I'm sure you're right but haven't seen anything actually stating this.

Thanks in advance!

Per my understanding virtually all square taper cranks and square taper bottom brackets except Campy have been JIS taper for 20+ years.

If the OPs frame is old enough then for all I know it may have used a different taper on the spindle.

Phil wood's site offers good info on bb spidle tapers:

I think they took this info directly from Sheldon anyway.

EDIT: Here's the sheldon BB article:

Quick google search yielded,

Propulsion cranks are available in 160, 165, 170 and 175 mm square taper silver arms and champaign 46T x 1/8 ring in 130 bolt circle diameter. The manufacturer suggest 107 mm JIS spindle but if frame clearance allows the 103 sugino results in better chainline.

I did recently buy a forza crankset, non-campy, from Bikepartsusa, expecting it to be JIS since almost all are nowadays. It ended up being ISO. This is the crankset I jammed into the JIS BB. There are still a few out there.
