Hi all, I bought a Trek 1000 road bike as a "starter" bike. I bought the bike because it was in my price range, my LBS was mainly a Trek dealer and I am cycling mainly for hard fitness. I haven't considered entering any races yet but possibly may consider. I was away from cycling for the last few years but decided that I wanted to get back into the swing of things again. Anyway, it's a 2004 Trek 1000 everything was stock when I bought it. I was thinking about upgrading some parts of the bike to make it more efficient for my purpose. I was wondering if anyone can suggest some ideas or advise me what you would do if you owned one or is worth it?

i'm probably not the best upgrader but i do know quite a bit about 1000s.

well, off the top of my head i would get clipless shoes and pedals. that is thing that just sticks out at me. straps and not near as efficent.

new wheelset would be a good choice too.

Upgrade it to a 1200. :)

Seriously, the best bang-for-the-buck you can do for that bike would be to get better wheels. A set of good OP's, Bonty Race Lites or Ksyrium Elites would make a world of difference. Bought used, they can be very reasonable.

Another, less expensive set of wheels I'd recommend are the Neuvation M28 Aeros. $250 for the set at Getawaybikes.com - I've been very pleased with these.

Down the road you might consider a carbon fork and upgrading the drivetrain from Sora to 105 or Ultegra. But at that point, it might be a wiser decision money-wise to start thinking about a new ride. Good luck.

I have an ocr3, same level as the 1000 except it has a CF fork

I have purchased a set of look clipless cx6 and road shoes....high anticipating it...next i will be upgrading to a set of nice wheels...

as 55/rad mentioned above, upgrading grouppo are not the best-bang-for-buck upgrade....

Hey there,
I am also a Trek 1000 rider. I was an avid MTB and wanted to give road biking a try, so in 2000 I purchased a new Trek 1000, which as far as I could tell was the best bang for the buck entry-level performance bike. I was instantly bit by the road bike bug, and the MTB now gets out on the trails less frequently.
Like yourself, I have been looking to upgrade, and weighing the pros and cons of new components compared to new bike. Don't get me wrong, on the 1000 I have been able to keep up with my cycling buddies, and it has done most everything I ask of it.
Agreeing with Beachbum, your first move is to clipless pedals. I would also stay away from dumping the Sora, it's just not worth it $$$$.
My current decision problem is on a new wheelset. Mine have given me a lot of problems (blue Airliners, constant truing and broken spokes), but I think the 2004 model has different wheels. I am now trying to figure out whether it is worth it to plunk down $250 on a good set of new wheels or take the plunge and upgrade to a 2200 or 2300. Anybody have any hints on that one?

That's my frame, too. I say "frame" 'cause everything else is changed now. Except the wheels, which I am getting for my b'day this week! Oh, and bar, and brakes. Ultegra all around now: new shifters, chain, cassette, BB, FD, and slightly used cranks and RD. Cost me about 350 bucks total...not too bad. And new Time impact S pedals, too.

I plan for a frame upgrade sometime in the future, and will probably move my components over. It's hard to get the combination of components that I want on a new bike, so this is my way of doing it.

Others will tell you this already, but the best upgrades are made by getting lighter on rotating parts...lighter wheels, lighter clipless pedals...you'll be stunned at the difference that makes going uphill.

Of course, I just spen 1400 on a new bike, so who am I to discourage you from just buying a new bike?

we sell them at our shop. so i would assume any Trek/bontrager dealer would have them.

just to clarify, it's racelite not race X lite.

LBS cost on a pair of Race Lite's are $240. Once you add tubes and tires (and the labor to intstall them) there goes whatever little profit you had if you sell them for $300. Unless you mean you're selling them for $300 each.

hmm, that is something i'll check into. i KNOW we have sold 2 sets in the past couple weeks for $300. and it wasn't special deal either. it's possible we got them on clearance and sold them off cheap but i doubt it. i'll have an update on friday about that.

More likely they came off bikes that were sold because the buyers wanted a different wheelset.

yeah, that could be a possibility.

i did a search and i found a few sites with prices pretty close to $300. but on the other hand i saw some selling for the upper 4s.
