I'm new to biking and want to pickup a good bike for training and maybe racing. I'v been looking at the Trek 2100-2300 and they seem to be going for $500-$700 on ebay. What other bikes can you suggest that are this calibur/price range that I can shop around for online? Thanks

Since you're new to cycling I'd suggest getting fit to a bike at a bike shop to know what size frame you'll need, stem length, handlebar height, saddle height, etc.
You don't want to make a mistake and buy a bike that doesn't fit.

Agreed. There's nothing like a bike that fits well. Don't forget to look on Ebay or Bicycleblowout.com for steel bikes. Why do you think all those hard alu Trek bikes are posted on Ebay? Makes you wonder right?

while getting fitted at an LBS is a fine idea, i totally agree with the idea of buying online with a budget like that. the $500 to $700 price range isn't that exciting and i'm doubtful that the good ppl here care all that much between the differences in entry level bikes.

i like the idea of getting a steel frame if you can - but for that price you might get stuck with a heavy 520-tubed bike which would be kind of a drag.

have you checked out Fuji Roubaix Pro (on sale for like $860 i think) at Performance? that's a nice compromise of quality components on a decent steel frame and not much more money than you were looking at.

why not find specific ebay links and then ask what folks think rather than a toss up question without a lot of budget for folks to get creative with.

good luck!

I sized myself up and am a 54cm frame. I'd like atleast shimano 105 equipment. Not sure steel vs aluminum.

What do you think of this:

I'll look for the Fuji pro in my frame size.

BTW why do you suggest a steel frame bike? Anything besides the fact its more forgiving. How do they differ weight wise from aluminum+carbon?
